Look, here’s the deal. There are so many factors to consider when reviewing a VR headset like the PlayStation VR 2 that it makes it a little tricky to please everyone. I think John Linneman from Digital Foundry will have the tech-heads and VR veterans covered with his brilliant Digital Foundry review, and I’ll definitely touch on what the headset is like for beginners as I’m sure there’ll be a fair few new adopters coming in on launch. For this review though, I’ll mainly be comparing the experience of using a PSVR2 with that of the original PSVR, a headset…
Jeff Minter is a genius. I don’t know how else to describe a developer who’s been dabbling in far out magic since 1982 and conjuring up games that have always been pushing at the more extreme edges of the form: fizzing psychedelic light shows backed up by tightly engineered arcade chops, and experiences that dizzy you with their intensity and verve. Somehow his games haven’t lost any of their dazzle over his 40 year plus career, all of which to me makes him something of a hero to me. Excuse the hyperbole, but I don’t mind admitting that I’m a…
Activision Blizzard has announced open beta and early access dates for Diablo 4, ahead of the game’s full launch on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC this June. Diablo 4’s open beta and early access are split across two weekends, starting with early access from 17th to 19th March. This session is exclusive to players that pre-purchase Diablo 4, while the open beta – which runs from 24th to 26th March – will be available to everyone. Blizzard says the two sessions will offers players a “deep look into the early game including the Prologue and the entirety of Act 1”, and…
Audeze’s Euclid in-ear planar magnetic headphones are extraordinary. And at $1299/£1099, they’d better be. These are intended to be god-tier audiophile-grade in-ears for music and the like, but this is Digital Foundry – so we’ve focused on their gaming performance in our testing regime. Is it ever worth spending so much on in-ears for this purpose – and are there any cheaper alternatives worth considering? We’ll provide that information soon, but let’s start at the beginning: who is Audeze anyway? This Californian firm isn’t a mainstream gaming brand like your Corsairs or Razers, but the company has earned a reputation…
Games don’t really do demos in the way they used to, do they? I wonder if early access has something to do with it – I suppose it must do. But whatever it is, we miss them, and the barrage of demos released for Steam Next Fest has made us feel all nostalgic for them. Wasn’t it funny how for some games, a demo was all you ever needed? Over and over you’d play it, never really wanting anything more.Which are the demos you remember, though? And which are the memories that come bubbling up when you remember them? Let’s…
It’s been a long time coming, but acclaimed viking survival adventure Valheim finally has a release date on Xbox Series X/S and Game Pass, with developer Iron Gate Studios confirming it’ll be hitting Microsoft’s console on 14th March. Valheim, of course, took the PC gaming world by storm when it launched into Steam early access back in February 2021, selling 4m copies in just three weeks and nearly 7m by July that same year. Despite its huge success, Iron Gate has continued to take its time with Valheim, and it wasn’t until November last year that the game received the…
Tetris Effect: Connected – the multiplayer-enhanced version of Eurogamer’s Game of the Year 2018 – is getting four new game modes next week as part of its Winter Update. Tetris Effect, if it’s somehow escaped you, takes the classic block-dropping action of the seminal puzzler and cranks up the hypnotic allure by turning the whole thing into a shimmering, pulsating light and sound show in which everything syncs to the gorgeous music. Tetris Effect: Connected became the de facto version in 2021, chucking in cross-platform multiplayer support for competitive and co-op play as it made the jump to non-VR devices,…
Firaxis confirms new Civilisation in development as XCOM designer Jake Solomon departs
Strategy focused developer Firaxis has confirmed it’s working on a new entry in its long-running Civilization series, with the announcement arriving alongside the news that XCOM and Marvel’s Midnight Suns designer Jake Solomon is leaving the studio after 23 years. The announcement comes as Firaxis promotes Heather Hazen, previously the its chief operating officer, to the position of studio head. Hazen replaces Steve Martin, who served as Firaxis’ president and studio head for nearly 17 years. In a statement accompanying the news, Hazen said, “I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to carry on the studio’s storied legacy, beginning with the…
A new Pokémon Scarlet and Violet software update, known as version 1.2.0, will be released later this month. As previously announced, this update is due to arrive towards the “end of February”, although there is no firm date as yet. It is set to add “features to Pokémon Boxes” and address a variety of bugs that “affect game progress” in both Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, among other things. These include fixes for those rogue Poké Balls that were sometimes displayed in certain locations of the field unintentionally and an issue that meant the main character’s expressions did not change…
Activision Blizzard has said it is “proud” of Mike Ybarra’s leadership following a disastrous company-wide meeting to discuss an internal employee satisfaction survey. During the meeting Ybarra was asked several pre-screened questions on its supposed use of stack ranking for employee performance, the slashing of profit-share bonuses for 2022, and the announcement employees will be required to return to office working. However, Blizzard employees soon took to social media after the meeting to express their outrage at Ybarra’s comments.
