I started 2022 by suggesting that we question the prominence of earning as a “play” activity and of economic transactions generally in videogame worlds. One way of going about that is to think about the many different currencies we’ve all abandoned in various save files over the years. Rupees in Zelda. Microsoft has issued its response to the Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit against its planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The Gran Turismo series has sold over 90m copies, developer Polyphony Digital has announced. That eye-watering figure came from Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi as part of a message to fans to celebrate 25 years of the racing sim. While Sony hasn’t announced it as such, Gran Turismo is PlayStation’s best-selling franchise.
