After a rocky launch, Blizzard has updated fans on its progress tackling some of the various issues which have plagued Overwatch 2 over the past 24 hours. Many fans have been left unable to play for long periods, stuck in queues, left without access to previously-unlocked characters and items, or locked out of the game entirely by the requirement to log-in using their mobile phones. These issues have been exacerbated by a series of DDOS attacks aimed at the game’s servers. And today, following a bruising 24 hours, Blizzard has apologised. Blizzard has pulled back from its requirement that players add their mobile phone number to their Battle.net account in order to play Overwatch 2. It was previously mandatory for players to enroll in the “SMS Protect” system to access the game. Players who declined would be unable to login to the game’s servers. Blizzard argued that SMS Protect was necessary as the game transitioned to a live service free-to-play model, in order to combat “disruptive behaviour” and stop banned users simply creating a new account. With less than 24 hours to go until the long-awaited reveal of EA and developer Criterion’s latest Need for Speed game, a full name, plus a release date, and screens have leaked online. All this comes via a listing, still live at the time of writing, on Japanese retailer Neowing’s website – which, assuming its veracity (highly likely given the nature of the assets and details included), corroborates virtually all previous rumours circulating around the game in recent months. First is the name, Need for Speed: Unbound, which tallies with a report from Insider Gaming at the end of September,…
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr, the well-received 2018 action-RPG from developer NeocoreGames, will be making its way to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 on 27th October. Inquisitor – Martyr is a Diablo-esque take on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, casting players as Inquisitors who must battle their way, either solo or with friends, through a “haunted fortress-monastery which hides a terrible secret from the past”. It features cover-based combat, four classes (Psyker, Crusader, Assassin, and Tech-Adept, with the new Sororitas class due at a later date), a procedurally generated mission system, skill trees, a wide range of weapons and vehicles,…
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has laid out a timeline for its second phase of investigations into Microsoft’s proposed $68.7bn acquisition of Activision Blizzard, following concerns this deal could be deemed anti-competitive. New documentation from the CMA states that its statutory deadline to publish the final report will be 1st March, 2023. As such, the final deadline for all parties’ responses regarding this investigation will be in February. Between that time and now, the CMA will be conducting meetings with the main and third parties involved with this acquisition, issuing questionnaires and verifying the information provided. The European Union has voted to adopt a single charger design for use across all portable games consoles, smartphones, tablets and laptops sold in the region. Technology manufacturers will now be required to use USB-C charging ports in all smartphones and tablets sold in the region from 2024, and in laptops from 2026. Mice, keyboards, headphones are also included. As previously reported, the UK decided to opt out out of being included in this initiative when it was first proposed, despite its aims to cut electronic waste and generally make things a bit easier for those with a drawer full…
A few weeks back a friend recommended Jonathan Crary’s 24/7, a short, vital book I have just finished reading. I suspect a lot of it went over my head, but the basics are pretty simple. Crary, who is a professor of modern art and theory at Columbia, makes the case that the contemporary world’s focus on an endless 24/7 treadmill of consumption and toil has made sleep the true enemy of capitalism. Sleep is the last place where you cannot be sold stuff, or made to work, and so capitalism must fight sleep, and it will probably be a fight…
Blizzard says Overwatch 2’s servers are experiencing a “mass DDoS attack”, preventing players from accessing the newly launched game. Players have reported unexpected server errors and difficulties joining Overwatch 2 games throughout the evening following today’s free-to-play launch, with some claiming to be experiencing queues of as many as 40,000 other players. An earlier tweet by Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra acknowledged today’s server woes but gave no indication they might be the result of anything other that launch day teething troubles, only thanking players for their patience and pledging to “get [them] into the fun”. Tequila Works, the developer behind the likes of the sublime Rime and intriguing VR murder-mystery The Invisible Hours, has confirmed its formerly Stadia-exclusive action-adventure Gylt will be going multiplatform next year. Gylt, an enjoyably surreal horror yarn that follows the adventures of a young girl in search of her missing cousin, launched exclusively on Stadia back in 2019. And while Tequila Works did at one point suggest a multiplatform release might eventually be on the cards, it’s remained resolutely Stadia-bound in the years since. However, following last week’s announcement that Google will be shutting down Stadia on 18th January next…
