The British Film Institute has announced a new 10-year plan designed to “support film and the moving image”, including video games. The new initiative, entitled Screen Culture 2033, will “advocate for the value of the full breadth of screen culture, including video games and interactive work”. Describing screen culture as “young, dynamic and expanding”, the BFI says “it presents a wider screen landscape that encompasses film, television, digital media, extended reality (XR) and video games” and says “it has become the dominant means of communication, information and storytelling for Gen Z and beyond”. A new PC mod is replacing the face and voice of a Judgment character whose original likeness was unceremoniously pulled several years ago following a drugs arrest. Originally, the character model and voice for Judgement character Kyohei Hamura was based upon Japanese musician and actor Pierre Taki. Shortly after his drugs arrest, however, Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios scrambled to replace him with the voice and likeness of Japanese actor Miou Tanaka instead. Modder Timo 654, however, has brought Taki back to life – so to speak – by meticulously restoring the original voice lines and likeness. Read more…

Nier Automata’s spin-off anime series, Nier Automata Ver 1.1a, will premiere in January 2023. Whilst we’ve yet to hear of a definitive date, creator Yoko Taro was at least able to confirm the release window during Aniplex Online Fest, which took place over the weekend. Interestingly, Taro also revealed that due to the differences between storytelling via games and traditional mediums – and despite Aniplex’s hopes of a faithful retelling of the game – the anime’s story will differ. Elden Ring has been turned into a Silent Hill-esque horror game using a new mod. Of course, that can only mean one thing: fog everywhere! Streamer LilAggy – best known for his Elden Ring speedruns and completing Dark Souls using poop – installed a mod that adds the blizzard effect from the Consecrated Snowfield across the entire Lands Between. Renting games as a kid was frequently the only way I could play many new games. I was lucky that I’d typically receive a game for my birthday and for Christmas, but the rest of the year, games were expensive and out of reach through any other method than renting. PUBG developer Krafton has released a new visual teaser for its unannounced project based upon the Korean fantasy novel, The Bird That Drinks Tears. The developer says the trailer “illustrates” what audiences can expect from future entertainment projects based on the IP” as well as “guide the aesthetic and tonal directions of various multimedia projects based on The Bird That Drinks Tears, including a graphic novel and motion picture”. “The visual concept trailer was created using Unreal Engine 5 and highlights the mystical tone Krafton is aiming for with entertainment projects based on The Bird That Drinks Tears,” explains Krafton.…

Sega Europe’s Brian Ayers has died at the age of 42. The developer recommends at least a GTX 1060 or RX 580 video card, paired with at least a i7-4770K or Ryzen 7 1800X processor with 16 GB of RAM.
