Xbox boss Phil Spencer has issued a new blog post detailing plans for Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard franchises, following today’s announcement from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority that it will scrutinise the deal in detail. As you would expect, Call of Duty, Overwatch and Diablo will be made available via Xbox Game Pass, Spencer said, if and when Microsoft’s $68bn buyout of Activision Blizzard is completed. Spencer also made the guarantee that Xbox was “committed to making the same version of Call of Duty available on PlayStation on the same day the game launches elsewhere”. Read…

“Good writing” is a phrase that gets used quite often, and it can mean a lot of different things. Is good writing a good story? An unguessable twist? Fancy prose or deliberate themes? I’m sure I’ve used it at some point when what I meant to say is really: “lots of long words I don’t completely understand.” Still, Pentiment has good writing – wonderful writing, actually – and in this case I do know what it means. This game’s writing is witty, it has tempo and timing, it is genuinely, wickedly funny. It is also, above all, natural – something…

Content warning: this piece contains descriptions of the mortuary process.Morgues. All I have to do is write the word and it evokes a reaction. These places are steeped in our fundamental fears and preoccupations with death, and those fears and preoccupations are preyed upon by entertainment and amped up for horrors or police dramas. Chances are, you’ve never been in a morgue, but I bet you have an idea of what one looks like.I’ve been thinking about morgues this week because I’ve been in a couple and they made a strong impression on me. They’re not real, they’re in games,…

Developer 1047 Games has announced it will be “ending feature development” on its acclaimed free-to-play sci-fi shooter Splitgate in order to shift its focus to creating a new game set in the same universe. Splitgate – which has been described as “Halo meets Portal” in some quarters – made quite the splash last year. Despite having been around on PC since May 2019, an open crossplay beta for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC proved so popular that 1047 Games elected to delay the game’s multi-platform early access launch in order to better accommodate its surge in popularity. 1047 Games has continued…

It’s fair to say that eyebrows were both raised and furrowed when Sega first shared footage of Sonic Frontiers back in June, but its latest trailer – a three-minute overview video breaking down the various features and gameplay flow of Sonic’s latest adventure – offers the clearest explanation yet of how things will unfold come its launch on 8th November if you’re still a little puzzled by the whole thing.
