Pokémon Go developer Niantic has reportedly fire 85 to 90 members of its staff and cancelled four of its in-development projects – including a previously announced Transformers game and a collaboration with theatre company Punchdrunk – amid “economic turmoil” for the company. Spellbreak, the battle royale where everyone is a wizard, will shut down in 2023. Pac-Man World Re-Pac, the newly-announced remake of Pac-Man World, will feature Bandai Namco’s Pac-Mom character instead of the original Ms Pac-Man. This is the second time the switch has now occured, after Pac-Mom previously took Ms Pac-Man’s place in Bandai Namco’s Arcade Archives: Pac-Land earlier this year. The return of the Monkey Island series with the aptly named Return to Monkey Island was a welcome surprise when it was announced earlier this year (on April Fool’s Day no less). As we ready to catapult with full enthusiasm into summer, Microsoft has announced July’s Xbox Games with Gold, this time giving subscribers on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S access to Torchlight, Thrillville: Off the Rails, Beast of Maravilla Island, and Relicta. Sonic the Hedgehog’s original 16-bit adventures are considered some of the best games in Sonic history and – for my money – some of the best games ever made.
