The Quarry is everything we’ve come to expect from Supermassive’s deliciously bloody brand of horror. There are supernatural stalkings, life-and-death decisions to make, quick-time events, and plentiful gory deaths, and it’s all wrapped up in jaw-dropping graphic fidelity that is so realistic, sometimes you’ll forget it’s a game. Its characters – traditionally so irritating, it’s hard to find the will to keep them alive – are surprisingly likeable here, even if half of them spend most of the game drenched in blood and looking like a post-prom Carrie. The world you explore – an all-American summer camp that could’ve been…
New report says Fallout 76 development blighted by poor management and mandatory crunch
A new report into the development of Bethesda’s widely derided Fallout 76 has painted a picture of a studio in disarray, as poor management, a lack of design direction, and engine challenges created an environment of apathy, confusion, crunch, and burnout, and a game that ultimately failed to resonate with players. Announced in 2018 and launched the following year, Fallout 76 – an online take on Bethesda’s beloved post-apocalyptic RPG series – was less than well-received at launch. Eurogamer’s Wesley Yin-Poole even went as far as to call it a “bizarre, boring, broken mess” before slapping it with an avoid…
EA refutes new report claiming Battlefield 2042 development now in ‘abandon ship’ mode
EA has responded to new claims Battlefield 2042 has entered ‘abandon ship’ mode, insisting reports that only a skeleton crew is left working on the beleaguered shooter are “untrue”. Word that Battlefield 2042’s post-launch development has been dramatically downscaled was first shared by journalist Jeff Grubb on his Grubbsnax Giant Bomb show, where he claimed the remaining team has been tasked with delivering the four seasons of live service content promised to purchasers the “fastest and the cheapest it possibly can”. “This game is basically down to a skeleton crew,” Grubb told viewers (thanks VGC). “It’s down to like the…
While the wait for more news on Arcane’s second season continues, Riot Games has announced it’ll be airing a five-part making-of series, going behind the scenes of the acclaimed League of Legends animated show, starting this August. Arcane: Act 1, as season one was officially known, launched on Netflix last November, charting the early years of two of League of Legends’ most popular champions, sisters Jinx and Vi, in and around the rich city of Piltover and the oppressed underground city of Zaun. The response from critics and League of Legends fans was strong (Eurogamer’s Chris Tapsell called it “absolutely…
There’s another Minecraft game in the works, and this time it’s reportedly a real-time strategy title. Former Giantbomb host Jeff Gerstmann discussed what he’d seen of the game last night via Twitch, and suggested it was far enough along in development it could potentially be revealed as part of Microsoft’s Xbox and Bethesda Showcase on Sunday. As for the game itself, which Gerstmann said was currently in testing, it puts players in command of a “Steve-like” unit that directs others to fight off Minecraft enemies such as Piglins. Hideo Kojima, designer of the legendary Metal Gear series and 2019’s Death Stranding, is reportedly working on a new horror game starring actress Margaret Qualley called Overdose. That’s according to ceaseless leaker Tom Henderson, who, writing for Try Hard Guides, claims to have been sent early footage featuring a character – portrayed by Qualley, who previously played Mama in Death Stranding – roaming through dark corridors with a flashlight in her hand. Henderson says the sequence (displayed from a third-person perspective, although a first-person mode is also rumoured) culminates in a jump scare that brings a Game Over message up…
