Hello! Today we’re taking a look at one of Fortnite’s greatest features – the option to visualise sound effects. Chris: After a decade of mishearing people in the office, I’ve been wearing a hearing aid for most of the last year or so. It’s been absolutely incredible. I have mild hearing loss, mostly high frequency sounds, which is why I have had trouble with human speech – I can’t hear the consonants anymore. When I first put my hearing aid on at the hospital and then walked outside, I don’t think I’d ever heard so much birdsong in my life…
The Callisto Protocol has turned to many things for inspiration, including some of horror’s most terrifying movies like Alien and Event Horizon, but here’s one that may come as a bit of a surprise: SpongeBob SquarePants. No, I’m not talking about the (also horrifying) Rock Bottom episode where SpongeBob gets stuck in Glove World; it turns out that the way animated characters move have inspired the character director of The Callisto Protocol, too. “Some creatures came from the art perspective, though, like, ‘Hey, let’s just do something that is very crazy looking’. And then we put that in the game…
As our friends across the water settled down after their Thanksgiving celebrations, gaming seems to have been at the forefront of their minds because – would you believe it – Steam’s broken its own concurrent record. Yes. Again. Whilst the number includes players who are idle – that is, signed in but not actively playing anything – Steam’s own analytics show that a new peak of 31,349,780 concurrent players was set over the weekend. As is often the case, third-party tracker SteamDB boasts a slightly different number – a higher figure of 31,379,760 concurrent players – 9.3 of whom were…
Several videos purportedly featuring footage from the as yet unreleased Need for Speed Unbound have leaked online. The footage – uploaded by MrCarrot1890 and Lvneth on YouTube and spotted by the fine folks at Resetera – currently consists of numerous videos that culminate in about an hour of gameplay. It predates not only the 2nd December release date but also the early access period, too, which is supposed to go live on 29th November. Interestingly, it doesn’t look like the YouTube accounts in question took the footage themselves, as two of the videos were recorded from a Twitch livestream broadcast by…
This 40-minute symphony showcases A Plague Tale: Requiem’s “intense and emotional” music
To celebrate five The Game Awards nominations – including one for best music – Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment have released a new symphony performance of the music from A Plague Tale: Requiem. Acknowledging that “part of the success” of the sequel “undeniably goes to the game’s remarkable score”, the team held an “exceptional concert for the occasion of the game’s release” which is now available on YouTube. “A Plague Tale: Requiem, the spectacular, grounded medieval adventure within a violent fantasy world, has been nominated in no less than five categories for The Game Awards 2022, including the coveted Game…

Happy 25th birthday, Tomb Raider 2. Here’s a little piece to celebrate its quarter century. Every so often I load up a walkthrough of Tomb Raider 2 and take the whole thing in again. Always a walkthrough: I have the game on Steam, but I can never get it to run quite right, and besides, part of me doesn’t want to go back in person. These walkthroughs, though! Tomb Raider was a very technical platformer back in the days of the grid system, and some of these players out there are just astonishing. Their virtuosity can get in the way…
When given the choice, I always go for the mage. There’s just something about shooting magic out of my hands that appeals to me when playing video games, the ultimate power fantasy. Why swing metal when I can manipulate nature itself? Except with Final Fantasy 14 I went against my instincts, a decision I eventually came to regret. Square Enix’s MMORPG has an initially overwhelming choice of Jobs to choose from before you adventure in the land of Eorzea. Your Job is your role in the game. And I chose the wrong one. The first choice is between a tank,…
Remember the codename Nintendo “NX”? Before the Switch’s official unveiling, these two letters were how Nintendo referred to its NeXt-generation console. The NX name was used by Nintendo to refer to the Switch both internally and publicly, as the company began to drum up excitement for the Switch’s unveiling. (And because in the Wii U era, there wasn’t much else to get excited about.) But here’s one thing we never saw publicly: Nintendo’s own internal NX logo used in early versions of games destined for the Switch. A cutscene wrapping up Destiny 2’s current Season of Plunder has been found by fans and shared online, spoiling the end of the game’s current plotline. If you wish to remain unspoiled – the season is still set to run for another few weeks, until 6th December – then look away now. The cutscene, voiced by Saint-14, shows Fallen leader Mithrax converting the essence of dead baddie Nezarec into a potion, which is then brewed up and served like a cup of tea.
