Developer Spiders’ scrappy but enjoyable RPG GreedFall is getting a sequel, and it’ll be launching for PC and unspecified consoles in 2024. Or next year – publisher Nacon’s press release and YouTube description currently disagree, which I’m trying to get to the bottom of. When the original GreedFall launched in 2019, its combination of RPG action and BioWare-style player choice struck a bit of a chord despite its unavoidable rough edges, quickly raising its profile through plenty of positive word of mouth – ultimately, to the tune of over 2m sales – as players got stuck into its ambitious historical…

Trek To Yomi is a fascinating, extremely stylish release. Its aim is to emulate classic Japanese samurai movies, with Kurosawa and Kobayashi the clear influences. Everything from the letterboxed, monochromatic presentation right down to the film grain and shot framing are clearly inspired by Japanese cinema, with Unreal Engine 4’s post-processing pipeline used to render this stylised, cinematic experience. This isn’t a massive blockbuster title but there’s a deep fidelity to the source material here and a brilliant sense of aesthetics. There’s an immediate sense that the developers have tried to really achieve something special here and that starts with…

Last week, I got to have a closer look at the Saints Row reboot from Volition. As you would expect, it looked bombastic and eclectic, with a myriad of unusual ideas that can only really be married together in a Saints Row game. However, at this point, it also felt like Volition has focused a bit too much on adding in all this “stuff” to the game, and seemingly at the cost of some polish and finesse. Saints Row was confirmed to be a cross-gen release on its initial announcement last year, and that seems to be a fair market for…

Following my hands off preview of the Saints Row reboot, I sat down and chatted more with Volition developers Kenzie Lindgren (associate UX designer) and Damien Allen (principal designer). We covered a broad range of topics, including plenty on what’s new for this entry, but we started by discussing why Saints Row aficionados should come back to the series, despite its brand-new cast and setting. “It definitely still feels like Saints Row – even if it’s not the same characters, even if it’s not the same setting, even if it’s not exactly the same as before – it feels like…

From Elden Ring on Game Boy to that Advance Wars/Mass Effect mash-up, demakes are all the rage these days – and now it’s classic first-person puzzler Portal’s turn to get the retro port treatment, courtesy of a new fan project to rebuild it for N64. Portal, of course, released back in 2007 as part of Valve’s legendary Orange Box collection, where it immediately wrought cake memes, Companion Cubes and iconic antagonist GLaDOS upon an unsuspecting world. It also proved to be an ingenious puzzler beneath all that – tasking players with manipulating portals to navigate increasingly devious challenges – and…
