Best Spider-Man Game of All Time Face-Off: The Winner Revealed

Last week, as the much-anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrived, we asked you to help us decide which Spidey game was the best of them all. Was it Peter and Miles’ newest adventure on PS5? Or does 2004’s Spider-Man 2 or Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions still hold a special place in your heart? Or is your fave some other Spidey title altogether?

Now, after thousands and thousands of 1v1 battles with matchups like Ultimate Spider-Man vs. Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 vs. Marvel’s Spider-Man, the ultimate Spidey game has been chosen.

So, which title claimed the top spot as the greatest friendly neighborhood Spider-Man game? Drumroll please…

Some may say it is recency bias, but others, like IGN’s wonderful audience, will tell you that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has already cemented itself as the greatest Spidey game of all time. Yes, with a 92% win percentage after winning 11,585 of its 12,587 battles, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been voted as the best game to ever star our favorite web-slinger.

We here at IGN agree with the vote as we ranked Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as the best Spider-Man game as well.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a triumph; Insomniac just keeps getting better and better at making Spider-Man games,” we say in that ranking. “There’s no disputing that it’s more of the same to some degree, but the improvements layered on top of the excellent combat and web-slinging absolutely make this a crowning achievement. Getting to seamlessly switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales keeps the gameplay fresh, and the addition of web wings to help fly across the vastly expanded city alongside traditional swinging is a godsend. Moreover, the story of Kraven’s hunt and the Venom symbiote is as impactful as it is exciting, with fantastic performances from the whole cast giving it a hefty emotional weight. The next one might be even better, but for now, as far as the IGN staff is concerned this is the best Spider-Man game ever made.”

I think it’s safe to say Insomniac has the formula down for making Spider-Man games that resonate with millions around the world as Marvel’s Spider-Man from 2018 and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales followed right behind the sequel in spots #2 and #3 with winning percentages of 88.9% and 80.3%, respectively.

There is also an undeniable love for 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and that was echoed in the vote as it placed fourth just ahead of Ultimate Spider-Man. Spider-Man 2 was the game, for many, that most let us feel like Spider-Man before Insomniac came along and took it to new heights.

Rounding out the top 10 were Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, 2000’s Spider-Man, 2002’s Spider-Man, and Spider-Man/Venom: Maximum Carnage.

On the other side of the web was Atari 2600’s Spider-Man, which was actually the first game to ever feature Spidey. While it may have only reached a 13.6% win percentage, it will forever have the honor of being the first to bring Spider-Man to the world of video games.

Right behind that was Spider-Man: Toxic City, The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America in Dr. Doom’s Revenge, The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Invasion of the Spider Slayers, The Amazing Spider-Man: Web of Fire, The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes, Spider-Man: Battle for New York, 1990’s The Amazing Spider-Man for Game Boy, 1991’s Spider-Man: The Videogame, and 1990’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

Many of these games are from many years ago, way before the tech was there to let us truly become Spider-Man and swing through the streets of New York City. While a lot of these games without the freedom to swing around the city are still great, it’s hard to argue with the fact that we all just love swinging around an open world so much.

Are you wondering where you favorite Spider-Man video game landed, like maybe Spider-Man: Edge of Time? (It placed 11th!) For all the rankings, you can check out the full list of where all 35 Spider-Man video games that competed in this Face-Off ended up.
