The Game Awards’ favorite personality, Josef Fares, was back again this year to announce a new project. Well, sort of. In spirit, in the pre-show. Because it’s not a brand new game, as many may have expected. Rather, it’s a remake of Fares’ very first directed project that kicked off his notoriety for emotionally impactful, cooperative play. Yup, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is getting a remake.
If you’re unfamiliar with Brothers, it’s a pretty incredible indie darling from 2013 that follows an older and younger brother on a journey to obtain medicine for their ailing father. While Fares’ other games, A Way Out and It Takes Two focus on cooperative play between two people, the original Brothers was a single-player game where one person controlled both brothers simultaneously, leading to some really clever puzzle-solving.
This remake of Brothers is entirely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, and according to publisher 505 Games will “remain faithful to the original game.” There is one big addition though: while you can still play Brothers single-player as it was originally released, a new local co-op mode will allow two players to each control one of the brothers.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is being developed by Avantgarden, the Italian studio behind Last Day of June and Murasaki Baby. It’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam, Epic, and GOG on February 28, 2024. It’s definitely one to revisit, especially if you didn’t play it in 2013. At the time, we called it “a unique twin-stick adventure brimming with imagination” in our original review.
