Destiny 2, Bungie’s long-running live-service FPS, may be getting its “final shape” today, but that shape appears to not include servers that are ready for the clamoring playerbase.
As has been the case for every major Destiny expansion since 2014, Destiny 2: The Final Shape has kicked off with hours of error messages and hours-long queue times as players rush to log in. The error message, which reads “Destiny 2 servers are not available” for most, has been met with annoyance from some, while most veterans are merely unsurprised by this longstanding tradition.
The issues likely stem from the massive influx of players the game sees with each new expansion, as Steam alone reported more than 200,000 players trying to log on simultaneously moments after the servers came online — a significantly higher number than that platform typically sees, though still well below the all-time player count of nearly 400,000.
Fittingly, Twitch has been full of streams from the Destiny community, who are staring at error messages for long periods of time.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape marks the conclusion of the 10-year “Darkness and Light Saga,” which has been the primary narrative thread since the beginning of the series. But as Elsie Bray likes to say, “all ends are beginnings,” and Bungie has already revealed that the conclusion of this saga will transition into an episodic model and future Destiny stories, and have even sparked speculation of Destiny 3.
