Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has revealed which game in the series he thinks is “most complete,” and it’s not the fan favorite Final Fantasy 7.
Instead, Sakaguchi told Inverse he believes Final Fantasy 6 sits at the top. This was released as the last 2D Final Fantasy game in 1994, before Final Fantasy 7 arrived on the original PlayStation and redefined the franchise in 1997.
“In terms of the Final Fantasy that I think is the ‘most complete’; I believe Final Fantasy 6 comes close, and does stand out above the other Final Fantasies, especially because it was the last Final Fantasy to use pixel art in all of its visual expression,” Sakaguchi said.
Final Fantasy 6 is certainly among the most beloved in the franchise and introduced the now synonymous steampunk elements for the first time, moving away from the strictly medieval fantasy setting of previous games.
Though it’s been ported to myriad consoles and devices already, fans are calling for Square Enix to release a full remake in the same vein as Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth, and the incoming third and final game.
Final Fantasy 6 director Yoshinori Kitase didn’t offer much hope when asked, however, as he said a remake akin to that of Final Fantasy 7’s could take around 20 years to complete. Final Fantasy 6 features so much content that he estimated it would take twice the length of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.
Kitase previously commented on the popularity of the idea though, even saying many developers within Square Enix are eager to work on a remake of Final Fantasy 6. The project would be very difficult, however, and Kitase said he couldn’t think about it at least until the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy has wrapped.
