First Ever Look at Starfield Land Vehicles Revealed in Brief Gameplay Clip

Bethesda has given Starfield fans a first look at what might be its most-anticipated feature yet: land vehicles.

The Fallout and Elder Scrolls game developer very briefly touched on the upcoming addition in an announcement video for the upcoming Starfield May update. As the footage shows, vehicles will allow players to traverse Starfield’s wide, open areas much faster. It’s a change players have wanted since Bethesda’s latest launched last year, though it’s unclear when they’ll arrive.

The moment was cut out and shared by @GPTGamingNews on X (formerly Twitter). In the clip, Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb can be seen teasing that “the team is working on our first land vehicle.”

The few seconds of footage shows a rover driving across a sandy planet and…that’s about it. It’s not much to go off of, but it is at least confirmation that Bethesda is cooking up vehicles that should make traversal around Starfield’s many, many planets much quicker. It’s unclear how or if players will be able to customize their vehicles or how such a massive change to the formula will be implemented. Bethesda also did not clarify when the vehicle or any others will launch outside of promising that it is on the horizon.

The May update, which is currently in Steam Beta with plans to launch for all come May 15, seeks to add more than a few quality-of-life changes to Starfield since releasing in September. A few notable additions include long-awaited tweaks to surface maps, new difficulty options, more display settings for Xbox Series X consoles, and more. You can read about everything new here.

Although Starfield prominently features customizable ships that can travel from planet to planet, players have begged Bethesda to give them a faster way to explore its sci-fi fields. Studio boss Todd Howard has attempted to address these complaints in the past, explaining that the team preferred knowing the pace at which players were experiencing its world. He also recommended players just use their in-game jetpacks if they are looking for speedier exploration.

For more on Starfield, read up on Bethesda’s plans to launch its Shattered Space expansion later this year. Then, be sure to check out our 7/10 review, where we said, “Starfield has a lot of forces working against it, but eventually the allure of its expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat make its gravitational pull difficult to resist.”
