Five Essential Tips for Escaping Together in How 2 Escape: Lost Submarine

    • Solene Rinn, Game Designer, Breakfirst Games

    Hi everyone,

We’re the team behind How 2 Escape: Lost Submarine, a cooperative escape game built around asymmetric gameplay, strong communication, and shared problem-solving. Inspired by titles like We Were Here and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, our mission was to create a game that brings people together, whether they’re seasoned gamers or playing games for the very first time.

The premise of How 2 Escape: Lost Submarine is simple. One player is trapped inside a sinking submarine that’s filled with various puzzles to solve, while the other supports them from the outside with instructions using a free Companion App on their phone. It’s tense, time-limited, and all about communication. To help you dive in, here are five essential tips for escaping with your friendship intact.

    1. Communicate Clearly and Listen Closely
Success depends on how well you and your partner talk to each other. Since each player has different parts of the puzzle, sharing what you see and really listening to each other is crucial. Don’t talk over each other – talk to each other.

    2. Be Descriptive and Precise
“This thing with the red squiggle” won’t cut it. Your partner can’t see what you see, so the more specific and detailed you are, the better your chances. Clear descriptions = fewer misunderstandings. You can only save the world once you know.

    3. Search Everything – No Clue Left Behind
In classic escape room fashion, the devil is in the details. Comb through every screen, prop, or file that’s on the submarine. The Companion App holds vital information, and your in-game surroundings may hide the key to your next move.

    4. Pen and Paper are Your Best Friends
Old-school, but effective. Some clues won’t make sense until later, and jotting things down can save you precious minutes when the pressure is on.

    5. Don’t Let the Pressure Get to You
Things can get intense, but remember, this is a game about cooperation. If you’re stuck, take a breath, talk it out, or laugh it off. Sometimes, all it takes is a different perspective to crack the code.

I hope that these tips will help you escape from the submarine and save the world, and I hope that our game sparked your interest. Maybe you’ve already got a companion in mind that you want to play with? How 2 Escape: Lost Submarine is now available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Grab your co-op partner, download the free Companion App, and see if the two of you can make it out in time. Have fun!

The unique co-op experience that made How 2 Escape a success is back with improved gameplay and new challenging puzzles!

The latest edition in the How 2 Escape series, How 2 Escape: Lost Submarine, has you and a partner work together to locate a missing submarine and prevent the start of a global war.

    SAVE THE WORLD

An important allied military base has been captured by enemy forces, prompting the government to preemptively order the launch of a torpedo to reclaim it – despite the potential for countless allied deaths.

However, after further internal discussions and negotiations with the enemy, the government has cancelled the strike that could spark a potential global war. The only problem is “The Triumphant,” the submarine carrying the torpedo, is out of communication range and no one can confirm if the cancellation orders have reached the submarine.

To prevent war, the government has tasked its two best experts, officers Haurée and Leroy, to locate “The Triumphant” before time runs out. These two strategic masterminds of the submarine fleet will face a reality they did not expect, as recent decisions have ignited a moral dilemma among the underwater sailors.

    COOPERATE TO WIN

2 players, 2 ways to play!

Put your communication and puzzle-solving skills to the test as you and a partner work together to prevent the start of war! Each of you has a crucial role to play that requires logic, coordination, observation and, above all, communication!

As player one, your job is to locate and investigate the inside of the submarine, where you’ll explore and interact with the environment.

Your friend is tasked with using the dedicated free companion app* to gather additional information so you both can solve the puzzles together.
