Two teenagers were part of the hacking group Lapsus$ that targeted Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games and leaked footage of the upcoming GTA 6.
As reported by the BBC, 18-year-old Arion Kurtaj from Oxford and a 17-year-old who cannot be named because of his age were part of the court-described group of “digital bandits” that also hacked Nvidia and Uber. Both teenagers will be sentenced at a later date.
Kurtaj was placed in a hotel by police after hacking Nvidia and having his identity and location being outed by rival hackers, and it was from this hotel room (and under bail) that he targeted Rockstar.
The court heard Kurtaj was “caught red handed” in “flagrant disregard of his bail conditions” when City of London Police searched his room and found his hacking instruments of an Amazon Fire Stick in the hotel TV and a smart phone, keyboard, and mouse.
Rockstar’s messaging service Slack was infiltrated in what was described as his “most audacious” hack, with Kurtaj posting: “I am not a Rockstar employee, I am an attacker.” Rockstar soon confirmed it had been victim of a network intrusion that also saw close to 100 different videos of the game shared online.
“We take leaks very seriously indeed and they disappoint all of us, it’s really frustrating and upsetting to the team,” Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in response.
Fans of the Grand Theft Auto franchise are still eagerly awaiting an official look at GTA 6, though publisher Take-Two Interactive has teased it could launch as early as next year.
