How PowerWash Simulator 2 is Giving You More of What You Already Love

    • Rebecca Sweetmore, Head of Marketing & Communications, FuturLab

    Summary

    • PowerWash Simulator 2 is bubbling up with fresh locations, soap-erior equipment, and flashy new features.
    • Design Director Dan Chequer tells us a little more about why a sequel was the natural next step.
    • PowerWash Simulator 2 is now available to wish list on the Microsoft Store for Xbox.

What’s better than first-person sprayer PowerWash Simulator? A second PowerWash Simulator! That’s right, we’re thrilled to finally be able to talk about the next soap-erior sequel in our beloved franchise, PowerWash Simulator 2, coming in 2025 to Xbox Series X|S and available to wish list now on the Microsoft Store for Xbox.

Those of you who are eagle-eyed Game Pass fans may have enjoyed the original already, but for those unfamiliar with the concept, let me give you the rinse. PowerWash Simulator is what it says on the tin: find yourself in a mess, clean it up, build your business, become deeply immersed in soothing satisfaction, and indulge in some fascinating lore, including a mayor, a cat and… aliens?

That sounds random, but this game has been so beloved (by over 17 million of you!) that we wanted to give you more. Design Director Dan Chequer tells us a little more about why a sequel was the natural next step.

“PowerWash Simulator has exceeded our expectations by taking off in the incredible way it has. Although we’ve added a huge amount of incredible content to the original game, we built and designed the game over four years ago when we never expected it to become so large. As a result, it has some technological limitations keeping us from adding new and interesting features. So, it made sense to start discussing where we could go from here.”

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

Famously, sequels can be tricky to get right, so we have taken a lot of time and consideration to ensure we approach it carefully to give you, our players, the best experience. You know what they say: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s why we haven’t tried to reinvent the wheel with our next instalment; the main thing our community of washers asks for is more, so that’s what we’re giving you.

“When we initially started discussing the sequel, it was important that the next game felt like a natural continuation and expansion of its predecessor. Our primary goal has always been to provide a soothing, frictionless experience, and we want players to move from the first to the second game easily while providing something new and improved – it’s a tricky balance,” says Chequer. “The result of that has been new features, equipment and quality-of-life improvements.”

We’re also very excited about new and improved soap, which is a sentence I never thought I’d write – more on that later, let’s take a look at what there is to look forward to in PowerWash Simulator 2.

A real home-improvement (there is one!)

“In the last game, you were working out of a garage, but you didn’t really have a space that was yours to come back to. This time round, we wanted to give players that, so we added the home base.” Says Dan, “You will be able to personalize it with furniture and trinkets you collect along the way to add your own stamp. Having a bricks-and-mortar space makes it feel like more of a business, adding to a real sense of continuation from the first game.”

A tale as old as grime

“The real challenge we had at the beginning of development is where do we go from the first game’s quite bombastic ending. What we wanted to do in PowerWash Simulator 2 was take the characters we had and find out where we thought they would be a few years later, as well as exploring the after-effects of the big events at the end of the last game. We wanted to build on that story, rather than replace it,” says Dan.

A design principle that we stuck to is that the narrative is very much ‘opt-in’. Players can have a legitimate and complete satisfying experience without reading a single message, but those who do get a really entertaining story to go with it, which explains what you’re washing and why, whilst linking all the campaign jobs together – that goes for both games.

Muck in and make your progress count

One change that just felt right was to introduce shared progression. Previously in multiplayer, those joining a host’s game didn’t benefit from the progress to their own career campaign (only the host’s), they also received a restricted monetary award with the host getting a better pay out.

Because PowerWash is about frictionless fun, we wanted to remove that barrier. In PowerWash Simulator 2, up to four players will now be able to play together online in career mode (an improvement on previously being restricted to two players), all earning equal progression and rewards.

We’re also introducing a split-screen mode, so you can team up and tackle the grime with friends or family and play ‘couch co-op’ offline and from a single screen.

    Soap-erior washing and equipment

The core focus of PowerWash Simulator is soothing, satisfying gameplay. We’ve talked a lot in the past about all the things, such as timers and antagonistic mechanics, that we chose to leave out in order to protect that experience. So, when it came to improving on PowerWash Simulator in the sequel, we thought long and hard about what new features to introduce.

“Washing is everything. Variety comes from what you wash, not what you do. We wanted to expand on that meaningfully, without adding anything that takes away from the core gameplay, so we prioritized adding features that let you wash in different ways,” remarks Dan.

“Something we’re excited to introduce is abseiling, because our community have asked about it since the first game came out. We’re in development on a couple of other pieces of equipment that I can’t speak about just yet.”

Soap is another feature we’ve been keen to improve on. In the upcoming game, players will be able to apply a soapy foam to the dirt that softens it, no matter how stubborn, this can then be effortlessly removed with any nozzle to reveal a sparkling surface.

As well as splashy new features, washing has been ‘cleaned up’ with improved visual effects – for silky-smooth swiping.

    A Community Clean-up

A behind-the-scenes change for us at FuturLab is that we are self-publishing PowerWash Simulator 2. Our COO, Chris Mehers, tells us a little more about what the future of the studio looks like: “When we initially launched PowerWash Simulator into early access in 2021, we never imagined the traction it would gain, the way that our community has embraced what originally was a curious concept has been beyond what we imagined. Because of this support, we have not only been able to grow as a studio but also continuously create content for the last 4 years, meaning that not only can we develop a sequel but look to build the title out as a franchise for (hopefully) many years to come, as well as continue to develop and publish more of our own original IP. As a studio with a team of talented and passionate developers, we are genuinely excited to take on this challenge and sincerely, thank you for washing!”

We have a whole host of juicy new content that we want to dish the dirt on, but you’ll just have to wait a little longer. In the meantime, PowerWash Simulator 2 is now available for you to wish list, and you can join our wonderful community of cleaners on all major socials: Discord, Twitter/X, BlueSky, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
