Lovecraftian Horror in Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss – Building a World That Shouldn’t Exist

    • Clara Licour, Community Manager at Nacon

Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, wants to bring players into a place that defies logic: a world that was never meant to exist, yet feels terrifyingly real. Translating the essence of Lovecraftian horror into a video game means confronting the impossible: how do you give form to what can’t be seen, and shape to what can’t be described?

For Big Bad Wolf Studio, it began with a challenge: to make the indescribable tangible.

H.P. Lovecraft’s stories thrive on the limits of human perception: impossible geometries, sounds that can’t be understood and beings that exist beyond reason. Bringing that to life meant creating spaces and creatures that feel both grounded and wrong — environments that seem to shift when you’re not looking, sounds that never quite resolve and architecture that disobeys the rules of physics.

Every corridor, light source and ambient vibration in Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is designed to make players question what they see — and what they think they understand. The deeper you go, the less you can trust your senses.

Few locations in the history of horror fiction carry the same weight as R’lyeh, the legendary sunken city of Cthulhu. It’s often spoken of in whispers, imagined through fragmented accounts, but rarely depicted.

The vision of the city was built on contradiction: both monumental and claustrophobic, ancient yet pulsating with energy. The team behind Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss wanted players to feel like they were trespassing into something sacred and wrong. Exploring R’lyeh isn’t just visual; it’s psychological. The more time you spend within its walls, the more you begin to sense that the environment itself is aware of you.

Among the creatures that lurk in the abyss, the Shoggoth embodies everything that makes Lovecraftian horror so haunting. A mass of shifting matter and eyes, the Shoggoth represents the idea that true horror doesn’t need definition.

Sometimes you glimpse it directly. Other times, it’s only a shadow, a distortion or the echo of something passing just out of view.

True to Lovecraft’s vision, the Shoggoth isn’t meant to be fully understood: it’s meant to overwhelm. Not every secret in Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is meant to be uncovered.

Mystery is one of the core pillars of the game: it’s the foundation of everything. It represents that unknown, that seemingly impossible element, where players can truly prove themselves — and curiosity becomes their greatest weapon.

Because in Lovecraft’s world, knowledge doesn’t bring comfort. It brings consequences.

Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is coming soon to Xbox Series X|S on April 16, 2026. Join the official Discord to stay tuned.
