Mad Max Director George Miller Would Like Hideo Kojima to Make a Video Game Adaptation

Mad Max franchise director George Miller has said he would only be interested in adding another video game to the franchise if it could be made to “the highest level” by someone like Hideo Kojima.

Speaking to GAMINGbible on the red carpet for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Miller named Kojima the ideal candidate to take on a video game adaptation of the film series but admitted that he would “never ask” the legendary games designer to take on such a project because he has “so much fantastic stuff in his own head”.

Miller also referenced the Mad Max video game that came out in 2015, saying he thinks they could level up on it if they were to make another. “It wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be,” Miller candidly admitted before adding, “I’m one of those people that I’d rather not do something unless you can do it at the highest level.”

People online jumped to the game’s defence, noting it was up against a major release in, ironically, Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which launched on the same day and drew some attention away from Avalanche’s Mad Max. One person on X/Twitter called it “an underrated gem”.

IGN thought Mad Max was a licensed games that got things right, calling it “an engaging rampage through a brutal world of depravity and loss that urges you to probe every ugly corner”.

Kojima is currently working on a game collaboration with Jordan Peele, titled OD, as well as a live action film adaptation of Death Stranding and an all-new action-espionage genre game with the working title Physint. The highly anticipated Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is also due to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2025.

However, those wanting to spend more time in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Mad Max can do so with Furiosa, which hits theaters on May 24, 2024 as the latest installment in the film series. IGN’s review called it a “masterpiece”, saying it is “a powerful reflection on what it means to live and love in a dying world”.
