Mortal Kombat 1’s Ed Boon Promises to Address Widely Panned Nintendo Switch Version

The Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 is currently the butt of many internet jokes for its eye-popping visuals. Now, its chief developer has vowed to improve the quality of the game.

In an interview with BBC Newsbeat, NetherRealm’s Ed Boon said the Nintendo Switch version will “absolutely be getting an update”.

“And a number of the concerns of the issues that had come up will absolutely be addressed,” he said. “It would have been ideal for us to have released the version that we absolutely wanted. But anything that we’re finding a problem with is on our list and is going to be fixed.”

IGN’s review of the current-gen version of Mortal Kombat 1 returned an 8/10, but IGN’s review of the Switch version, ported by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive, came back with a 3/10. “Mortal Kombat 1 proves to be too much for the Switch’s dated hardware,” we said. “The load times are egregious, there are numerous bugs plaguing both graphics and gameplay, making for a poor quality port of a great game that’s all around aggravating to play.”

Exacerbating the issue is the fact Mortal Kombat 1 on Nintendo Switch is full price ($69.99 from the eShop), which means it costs the same as the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S versions. This has sparked a number of complaints from Switch owners, who feel their version of the game should cost less. IGN has asked Warner Bros. for comment.

Boon told Nintendo Switch owners that NetherRealm plans to support Mortal Kombat 1 on their console. “Anything that we see that is not acceptable will absolutely be addressed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 1 dataminers believe they’ve found clues to unannounced DLC characters. If you’re playing, check out how to perform all Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities.
