In the ever-evolving landscape of Overwatch 2, the introduction of new heroes isn’t merely a matter of expanding the roster—it’s about redefining gameplay and deepening the narrative. Wuyang, our newest Support hero (and the 44th Hero in the game), embodies countless hours of brainstorming by our team, our passion for innovative mechanics, and my own connection to his themes of resilience and balance.
I’m here to offer a personal lens on Wuyang’s development. As his concept artist, I remember the very first spark of inspiration that set me on this journey, so join me as I take you behind the curtain and walk you through how this water-wielding martial artist was brought to life.

Conceiving the Flow: Fusing Water, Healing, and Martial Arts
It all started with a question: what if a hero’s kit could embody the very essence of water—healing, adaptable, and unexpectedly powerful? From there, the design flowed (pun fully intended). I wanted a Support who didn’t just keep everyone alive, but did it with the same natural dynamism water brings when it carves its way through obstacles.
Early on, the cornerstone ability that shaped Wuyang was his primary fire. I’ve always loved the idea of having some extra agency over skill shots—being able to actually control the trajectory of a projectile mid-flight. The thought of watery orbs weaving their way around corners to heal allies (and in a pinch, damage foes) felt like something the Overwatch roster hadn’t seen before.
Once we layered the core gameplay with the fluid movements of a martial artist-in-training, the character started to take shape. Wuyang was becoming someone I could imagine bandaging wounds with a splash one second, and pulling a staff-spinning, high-flying acrobatic feat the next.

Martial Arts Through Animation
My visual fantasy for Wuyang moved beyond “just throws water.” I wanted to celebrate the kinetic artistry of martial arts, so we dove deep with the animation team. Every movement, from his athletic staff animations to his cheekily confident idle pose, was built to showcase that Wuyang isn’t just a healer, but character who’s trained tirelessly to master both the elements and his own body.
I’m especially fond of the animations we landed on for his primary fire. Each orb Wuyang sends into the fray is the result of his practiced effort. The way he spins his staff to reload, the dramatic slam for his Guardian Wave ultimate, and his acrobatic leap during the Rushing Torrent ability—these all reinforce Wuyang’s relentless energy and his status as a martial artist who just happens to control water on a whim.

Designing a Support Kit that Makes Waves
Wuyang also answers the call from players who are looking for innovative support play. Long-range water manipulation letting you help allies from a safe distance is just the surface of what he’s capable of—his kit is really built for those who love mastering skill shots and reading the ebb and flow of a match.
The tech he’s wearing—his staff and gauntlets—aren’t cheat codes. They’re only as effective as the martial artist who wields them. Wuyang’s speed, precision, and those hyper-pressurized water molecules that explode on contact? That comes from nonstop training, and maybe a bit of stubbornness—something I relate to as an artist working to bring this vision to life!
When you take Wuyang into a match, you’re channelling his “never give up” mindset. Team up with a shield-bearer to amplify his healing, practice banking those crafty water orbs around corners, and time your ult to turn enemy pushes into highlight reels.

The Art of Resilience
Wuyang’s visual design is rooted in a lesson close to any artist who’s on their journey: it’s not the tools that make the hero, but the dedication behind them. His story speaks to resilience and the pursuit of mastery. As a character designer and artist, I wanted every detail, from relative simplicity of his futuristic active wear to the condensing of techy details on his gloves and staff, to reflect these ideas.
Wuyang is the culmination of working hard, overcoming odds, and staying spunky along the way. As you guide his water orbs and slam out those ultimate moments, I hope you feel that sense of accomplishment—the kind that comes from both practice and play.

Make a Splash!
I can’t wait to see how you all use Wuyang’s kit and discover new ways to support your squad. Whether you’re outhealing the opposition or landing trick shots across the map, Wuyang is here to reward creativity, resilience, and a little bit of that fighting spirit.
So queue up, wield the water, and keep the healing spirit flowing. Bring your best moves and let’s make some waves!
