Godus and Godus Wars developer 22cans has withdrawn both games from Steam, ending a sorry saga for Peter Molyneux’s controversial project.
22cans launched god game Godus on Steam in early access form 10 years ago and was soon hit with a backlash over broken promises and a lack of updates. Godus has since gone down as one of the most disastrous crowdfunded games of all time, with Populous creator and Lionhead co-founder Molyneux retreating to background coding after receiving criticism from fans.
Now, a decade after launch and nearly eight years since its last update, Godus exits Steam with a ‘mostly negative’ user review rating and having never left Early Access.
“22cans would like to share important news regarding our games, Godus and Godus Wars,” reads a statement. “Regrettably, due to an upcoming technical change to Amazon Web Services, affecting our ability to serve necessary game files to new users, these titles are to be withdrawn from the Steam store. Please be assured that existing players can continue to enjoy these games without interruption.
“We sincerely appreciate the incredible support from our players over the past decade and extend our heartfelt thanks to you all.”
As you’d expect, Steam users are taking this announcement as an opportunity to have their say on Godus in recent reviews, with the collective sentiment one of abandonment.
As for what’s next, Molyneux has said he’s working on a fantasy role-playing game set in Albion, which just so happens to be the name of the fantasy Britain in which the defunct Lionhead’s Fable was set.
