{"id":36752,"date":"2023-10-11T15:00:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T14:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.xtremeservers.com\/blog\/epic-bans-rocket-league-item-trading-community-calls-for-boycott-as-thousands-sign-petition\/"},"modified":"2023-10-11T15:00:07","modified_gmt":"2023-10-11T14:00:07","slug":"epic-bans-rocket-league-item-trading-community-calls-for-boycott-as-thousands-sign-petition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.xtremeservers.com\/blog\/epic-bans-rocket-league-item-trading-community-calls-for-boycott-as-thousands-sign-petition\/","title":{"rendered":"Epic Bans Rocket League Item Trading, Community Calls for Boycott as Thousands Sign Petition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section class=\"article-page\">\n<p>The Rocket League community is up in arms over a controversial decision to remove item trading.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"mobile-ad-break\"><\/section>\n<p>Publisher Epic Games and developer Psyonix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketleague.com\/news\/removing-playertoplayer-trading-in-december\/\">announced their intention<\/a> to remove player-to-player trading from the popular car football game on December 5 at 4pm Pacific \/ 7pm Eastern \/ 12midnight UK, insisting the decision had to do with bringing Rocket League in-line with its wider policy around item shops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re making this change to align with Epic\u2019s overall approach to game cosmetics and item shop policies, where items aren\u2019t tradable, transferrable, or sellable,\u201d a statement from the \u2018Psyonix Team\u2019 read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis opens up future plans for some Rocket League vehicles to come to other Epic games over time, supporting cross-game ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"ignvideo\" data-slug=\"rocket-league-official-season-12-gameplay-trailer\" data-loop=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>Psyonix said the trade-in system for core items, tournament items, and blueprints will let players continue trading duplicate or unwanted items to receive a random new item of higher rarity, and players will not lose any previously traded items when player-to-player trading is removed.<\/p>\n<p>In the same announcement, Psyonix issued a warning to those who may consider using \u201cfraudulent\u201d third-party trading websites or servers. \u201cAfter December 5, there will be no way to trade items with any player or between accounts,\u201d Psyonix said. \u201cWebsites or servers advertising such services are fraudulent and have no connection to Psyonix or Epic Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What if you lent someone an item? \u201cThese actions are not supported by Psyonix and all trades are considered final,\u201d Psyonix said. \u201cOur support team cannot help reverse trades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement sparked an angry backlash from the Rocket League community, with some pointing out achievements that require trading will become impossible to obtain. Epic Games came under fire across social media and in particular on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/\">the Rocket League subreddit<\/a>, which is packed with threads from players expressing their dismay at the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can\u2019t add a metric s**t ton of items to the game and then remove player trading, what if you want something obscure?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/174qmy4\/psyonix_removing_trading_is_embarrassing\/\">redditor Odd-Market-2344 pointed out<\/a>. \u201cWait for a billion years for it to show up in the item shop?\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"quoteBox\">&#8220;Just sad what this game has been through since Epic took over.&#8221;<\/section>\n<p>\u201cThis right here is the main reason I\u2019m hating it, apart from almost every item from there on being multiplied in price by a factor of five, 10, 20, 50 and so on,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/174qmy4\/psyonix_removing_trading_is_embarrassing\/\">nik8611 added<\/a>. \u201cAbsolute disgrace and what a way to piss off the majority of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat an idiotic thing to do,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/174qmy4\/psyonix_removing_trading_is_embarrassing\/\">Amazing_Following452 said<\/a>. \u201cYour community is already clearly dying and instead of improving the game you go after trading. How to kill your game even more. Just sad what this game has been through since Epic took over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall me a conspiracy theorist but I&#8217;m pretty sure they&#8217;re doing this to make money, not to align with Epic&#8217;s policies,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/174qmy4\/psyonix_removing_trading_is_embarrassing\/\">EpicOweo claimed<\/a>. \u201cWithout trading, outside of free drops and free Rocket Pass, there is no way to get items without buying credits. They&#8217;re trying to get people to use the item shop and they&#8217;re trying to force people to buy credits if they want any decent items (for building blueprints or otherwise).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/keep-player-trading-in-rl\">petition<\/a> on Change.org was swiftly set up, and is already well on its way to its target of 5,000 signatures. Nick Wallgren, who created the petition, said: &#8220;When I first started to play Rocket League, trading was one of my favorite things to do and what got me to play the game more. Taking it away from the player base is an absolute disgrace and the Rocket League team needs to rethink this decision immediately. Sign this to let them know to change it!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One Redditor created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/1750mmr\/keep_player_trading\/\">series of posters<\/a> to help get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/174qzxl\/boycott_the_item_shop_and_rocket_pass\/\">Rocket League item shop and Rocket Pass boycott<\/a> going. Some Rocket League players have even said they\u2019re now quitting the game. \u201cIt&#8217;s been a long fun road guys and gals, but it ends here for me,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/174s5m6\/been_playing_for_6_years_removing_trading_is_it\/\">theonlyepi said<\/a>. \u201cSee you all in the next fun competitive game!\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"slideshow\" data-slug=\"screens-rocket-league\" data-value=\"screens-rocket-league\" data-type=\"slug\" data-caption=\"\"><\/section>\n<p>The reaction to the news is fuelled by a feeling from the Rocket League community that the game has gone downhill ever since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2019\/05\/01\/epic-games-acquires-rocket-league-studio-psyonix\">Epic bought Psyonix<\/a> in May 2019. At the time, Psyonix said: &#8220;Rocket League always has been and always will be a community-driven game, and now that we have joined forces with Epic, we will be able to serve our community in even bigger and better ways!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But players say this hasn\u2019t proven to be the case. \u201cThe latest decision to remove trading is the last straw in what has been an absolute s**t show for the past three to four years,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RocketLeague\/comments\/174r77v\/fuck_you_psyonix\/\">didiops said<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019ve done nothing to improve this game. You\u2019ve made no effort to improve communication for your players and fans. You\u2019ve removed entire sections of the community to drive profit and greed. You\u2019ve destroyed our game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope you realise that even if you reverse this trading decision, the damage is already done. F**k you, and f**k Epic Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the latest in a string of negative headlines for Epic Games, which recently made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/fortnite-maker-epic-games-laying-off-870-employees\">sweeping layoffs that affected an eye-watering 830 staff<\/a>. CEO Tim Sweeney is being criticised for Epic\u2019s pursuit of the metaverse and costly legal battles.<\/p>\n<p>Justifying the layoffs, Sweeney admitted Fortnite growth is currently \u201cdriven primarily by creator content with significant revenue sharing, and this is a lower margin business than we had when Fortnite Battle Royale took off and began funding our expansion\u201d.<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"divider\"><\/section>\n<p><em>Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN.
