Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man 2 is already bringing the heat with longtime fan favorites like Kraven and Venom. But they\u2019re not the only familiar faces that protagonists Peter Parker and Miles Morales will encounter. Among the antagonists is a villain who has been an understated favorite of fans for decades: Lizard. And just like the other headliners in Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man 2, getting Lizard\u2019s look and movements down right took a lot of effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe first thing we always do when we look at a Marvel character is reference the comics,\u201d says Jacinda Chew, senior art director at Insomniac Games. \u201cAnd then from there, we collaborate with Marvel to put our own spin on it. It can come from the gameplay, or because of the narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53249333164_8099874441_h.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53249333164_8099874441_h.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In this case, players will notice that Lizard appears in two different forms. \u201cThere\u2019s a more classic Lizard, which has the lab coat, the pants,\u201d Chew continues. \u201cHe\u2019s smaller and human-sized. He\u2019s also able to communicate to Peter. But our version of Lizard\u2013he\u2019s leaner, meaner, bigger and greener, in all ways. He\u2019s not wearing clothing, and he\u2019s lost all humanity. So, we\u2019re not able to communicate with him. That\u2019s a really big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The graphical prowess of the PlayStation 5 console makes all of Spidey\u2019s foes look more impressive\u2013you\u2019ve already seen the terrifying level of detail of Venom\u2019s impossibly sharp fangs and slimy tongue. But what about Lizard\u2019s reptilian skin?<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media4.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExa2U5aGVhc2R4djNuZnZrZ2RsdzB3eXkzM2xka3N5OWNxeHNrNnhpYSZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/1hVjxIrqgX9fiNDUcz\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe looked at a lot of lizard skin for research,\u201d replies Chew. \u201cThe thing about lizards in real life\u2013their skin\u2019s actually really dry. Most people who looked at our Lizard kept initially saying \u2018he\u2019s not slimy enough.\u2019 But I think it\u2019s a nod to what people expect a lizard to look like\u2013he\u2019s got that lizard skin, but it\u2019s actually much shinier than what you\u2019d see on a real lizard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0\u201cWe gave him spikes, too. For design references, I tried to look at real-life lizards that looked a bit more prehistoric, because some lizards can look kind of soft and cute. I was looking at spikier, more snake-like, more aggressive references. We also wanted eyes that look more like animal eyes. If you look at cats, their pupils grow at night. We made those kinds of eyes for him\u2013when light hits his eyes, they look smaller, his eyes are actually reacting to light. We did a lot of research on how to make that happen in real time on the PS5.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExMXlrdzlrbmY3M2w3d2Z5NDcxeXBsZTFkcTc4aGV1M2c2d21tZmlhNCZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/qDdGhYAkNM3nyfUUs7\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another use of the PS5 console\u2019s powerful hardware comes in simulating realistic muscle movement. \u201cWe are also doing muscle simulations\u2013looking at real animal or real human actors and seeing how those muscles deform and running simulations. I think it\u2019s incredible that we\u2019re able to do this at this point in developing video games, but it\u2019s also somewhat subtle, because you may not always notice that difference until we disable all the muscle simulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Insomniac\u2019s unique take on Lizard also features a very slick technique where he sheds his own skin\u2013an impressive visual to behold. \u201cAgain, we also looked at what that looks like in real life. Our artists used a program to simulate how the skin might move fluttering in the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media4.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExOWEzOXVpdTE2Z293cjRyYXA0ZG1rYWVscXNlZGo4dGtuMTFheHYxaiZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/Uvyfjtm3hRfdU9V7xd\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s one thing to make a great-looking character model, but it\u2019s another thing to make it move in a way that conveys unrelenting primal ferocity. Chew elaborated on the ideas used during the crucial animation process. \u201cLizards actually move very low to the ground\u2013it\u2019s not very intimidating. In the comics, Lizard is more bipedal and upright, so more human. We had to thread that needle\u2013he\u2019s bipedal but still has to maintain some of that lizard look, so he\u2019s got that curved back. The idea behind his movement is that he moves at a speed that feels fast but heavy. The animation team deserves a lot of credit for conveying that strength and power and speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53248972806_1e4a291b41_h.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53248972806_1e4a291b41_h.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Overall, Chew, Marvel, and the team are happy at the fan reaction to Lizard and other Super Villains. \u201cWe have a lot of people here who know the comics really well, so we cater reveals and teasers for that rabid fan base. We know that people want to see Lizard in his lab coat, and then they want to see what happens and how he gets big.
