And to celebrate, Valve has gone all out on commemorating the milestone, including making Half-Life free to own on Steam for a limited time and releasing a big anniversary update, which includes Steam Deck verification, updated graphic settings, new multiplayer maps, and more. <\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"mobile-ad-break\"><\/section>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/news\/app\/70?updates=true&amp;emclan=103582791433474307&amp;emgid=6941797379568863069\">a blog post<\/a>, Valve rolled out a massive 25th-anniversary update for Half-Life, with the company deeming &#8220;this anniversary version of Half-Life to be the definitive way&#8221; to experience this late &#8217;90s classic. A few highlights in the new update include Half-Life finally getting verification for Steam Deck, updating the in-game menu&#8217;s design to look more like the one found in the 1998 original, and UI scaling to allow for higher resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>And if you have yet to play or own Half-Life, the Steam version is free to obtain. The game was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@wario64\/post\/Czt-j_FPa3X\">available free of charge briefly yesterday<\/a>, but the promotion is back up on Steam, with users having until Nov. 20 to claim a copy for their digital library.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond a big update, Valve has also published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TbZ3HzvFEto\">a documentary<\/a> where the original development team shares their memories of the creation of Half-Life. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Half-Life turns 25 this weekend, and we&#8217;re pushing a big update to bring back some of that 1998 feeling with restored original launch day content, brand new multiplayer maps, a look behind the scenes with the original development team, and more: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ceV4oePUyP\">https:\/\/t.co\/ceV4oePUyP<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1eOtLiHXbE\">pic.twitter.com\/1eOtLiHXbE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Valve (@valvesoftware) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/valvesoftware\/status\/1725586211551719463?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 17, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Half-Life was released on Nov. 19, 1998, and it quickly became one of the more influential games in the first-person shooter genre and the industry as a whole. It spawned a series that consists of five games, but also influenced the creation of mods that would eventually become standalone products, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/games\/counter-strike\">Counter-Strike<\/a>, and an unofficial remake released in 2020 called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/black-mesa-review\">Black Mesa<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/1998\/11\/26\/half-life-5\"> review of Half-Life<\/a> said, &#8220;[Half-Life] is a tour de force in game design, the definitive single-player game in a first-person shooter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Check out the patch notes below for more on changes introduced in the Half-Life 25th anniversary update.  <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update Notes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New Content<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Now Verified on the Steam Deck (and our native Linux runtime has been set as the default).<\/li>\n<li>Half-Life: Uplink \u2014 the original standalone Half-Life demo \u2014 has been added to the game, and is accessible through the &#8220;New Game&#8221; menu.<\/li>\n<li>Added four all-new Half-Life Deathmatch maps: contamination, pool_party, disposal, and rocket_frenzy<\/li>\n<li>Added three old Half-Life Deathmatch maps formerly available only on the &#8220;Half-Life: Further Data&#8221; CD: doublecross, rust_mill, xen_dm.<\/li>\n<li>Added Ivan the Space Biker, Prototype Barney, Skeleton, and Too Much Coffee Man as player models to Half-Life Deathmatch.<\/li>\n<li>Added dozens of new sprays formerly available only on the &#8220;Half-Life: Further Data&#8221; CD.<\/li>\n<li>Added support for Steam Networking, allowing easy multiplayer via Steam&#8217;s Join Game and Invite features.<\/li>\n<li>Added support for Steam Friends Rich Presence, allowing your friends to follow your journey through Black Mesa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nostalgia<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Brought back the original Valve Intro video. Can be skipped with the &#8220;-novid&#8221; launch command.<br \/>Updated main menu to a design inspired by the game&#8217;s original 1998 main menu.<\/li>\n<li>Changed the default models to the original (non &#8220;HD&#8221;) models.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gameplay Changes<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Improved physics for throwing grenades.<\/li>\n<li>Improved randomness for initial spawn points in multiplayer.<\/li>\n<li>Improved satchel charge controls: primary fire now always throws a new satchel, and secondary fire always detonates.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed push-able entity movement being based on framerate.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed players with high framerates freezing in place on death in multiplayer.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed some cases where the player could get stuck in place on level transitions.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed some cases where characters would interrupt important dialogue with their &#8220;greetings&#8221; dialogue.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed weapon view-bob angles.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed red barrels at the start of Surface Tension not launching as intended.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed Snarks attacking FL_WORLDBRUSH entities (such as func_walls).<\/li>\n<li>Fixed players sometimes failing to deploy a snark while crouching and looking down.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed certain convars (&#8220;pausable&#8221; and &#8220;sv_maxspeed&#8221;) being set to incorrect values when entering a singleplayer game after a multiplayer game.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed singleplayer auto-aim setting being changed when entering a multiplayer game that disallows auto-aim.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed the flashlight HUD showing empty after loading a savegame.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed rockets in CONTENTS_SKY not always detonating.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed incorrect bullet impact sounds for NPCs.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed gauss gun making a loud static noise if it was charged across level transitions.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed a crash in mods that display keybinds in their UI.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed singleplayer weapons not auto-switching away when exhausted (grenades \/ snarks \/ satchels \/ etc)<\/li>\n<li>Fixed interpolation artifacts when animated models are moved by other entities.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed some buffer overflow exploits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>UI Changes<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Main-menu background and buttons have been reskinned, and now scale based upon screen resolution without stretching, supporting background image layouts up to 3840&#215;1600.<\/li>\n<li>In-Game HUD now uses double or triple sized sprites when playing at higher resolutions.<\/li>\n<li>UI dialogs and in-game fonts now scale to improve readability at high screen resolutions.<\/li>\n<li>In-Game HUD HEV suit display has been shifted to the left of the screen, and no longer changes position at larger screen resolutions.<\/li>\n<li>Added an &#8220;Enable texture filtering&#8221; setting.<\/li>\n<li>Added an &#8220;Allow widescreen Field of View&#8221; setting to correct non-anamorphic FOVs, for widescreen and ultrawide displays.<\/li>\n<li>Re-organized all the Settings screens to improve legibility, and support controller navigation.<\/li>\n<li>Updated the Pause menu to be aware of the current gameplay mode.<\/li>\n<li>The default server name and multiplayer player name are now based on the player&#8217;s Steam Persona.<\/li>\n<li>The Steam platform menu has been removed, now that all its features are in Steam itself.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed application icon rendering incorrectly when using the software renderer.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed player and spray images not updating their coloring on the settings screen.<\/li>\n<li>Removed the now very unnecessary &#8220;Low video quality. Helps with slower video cards.&#8221; setting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Input Changes<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Improved support for keyboard and controller navigation everywhere.<\/li>\n<li>Added &#8220;Lower Input Latency&#8221; option: Synchronizes the CPU and GPU to reduce the time between input and display output.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed issues that caused jerky mouse \/ joystick input.<\/li>\n<li>(We basically rewrote it all &#8211; if you&#8217;ve got a custom Steam Input controller configuration, you should rebuild it from our newly published Official Configuration).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multiplayer Balancing<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased the 357 damage from 40 \u2192 50.<\/li>\n<li>Hive Hand reload time has been reduced from 0.5s \u2192 0.3s per shot, and it will be selected at higher priority than the pistol on pickup.<\/li>\n<li>MP5 now always starts with full ammo when initially picked up.<\/li>\n<li>Players no longer drop empty weapons, and any that are dropped are reloaded by what&#8217;s in the dying player&#8217;s backpack.<\/li>\n<li>Improved client-side prediction to reduce &#8220;ghost shots&#8221;. Like Counter-Strike, consider hitboxes and not just bounding boxes for hits on the client.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed network predicted crowbar swing damage being incorrect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rendering<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Added setting to turn off texture filtering when using the OpenGL renderer.<\/li>\n<li>Default gamma has been decreased from 2.5 \u2192 2.2, now that we aren&#8217;t all playing on CRTs.<\/li>\n<li>Restored OpenGL overbright support.<\/li>\n<li>Added support for UI Sprites and Texture files larger than 256&#215;256.<\/li>\n<li>Added support for UI Font special render modes: &#8220;blur&#8221; and &#8220;additive&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Default resolution is now based on the resolution of the desktop, instead of a 640&#215;480 window.<\/li>\n<li>Software renderer will now correctly filter out incompatible resolutions, unless there is only 1 resolution available on the display.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed fullscreen software renderer crashing on systems that don&#8217;t support 16-bit color.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed software renderer being stretched when using widescreen resolutions.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed skyboxes and sky color incorrectly carrying over when transitioning maps in multiplayer.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed the game appearing too dark after modifying video settings.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed MSAA in windowed mode.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed mipmap rendering on studio models.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed gluon gun sprite rendering in multiplayer.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed gluon gun sinusoidal noise being incorrect.<\/li>\n<li>Various optimizations to support the newly increased engine limits.<\/li>\n<li>OpenGL optimizations for the Steam Deck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engine Improvements for Mod Makers<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased maximum limit of dynamic sound channels from 8 \u2192 32.<\/li>\n<li>Increased maximum limit of sentences in the sentences.txt file from 1536 \u2192 2048.<\/li>\n<li>Increased maximum number of entities (MAX_EDICTS) from 900 \u2192 1200.<\/li>\n<li>Increased MAX_PACKET_ENTITIES from 256 \u2192 1024.<\/li>\n<li>Increased MAX_GLTEXTURES from 4800 \u2192 10000.<\/li>\n<li>Increased software renderer geometry limits: max spans 3000 \u2192 6000, max surfaces 2000 \u2192 4000, and max edges 7200 \u2192 14400.<\/li>\n<li>Cycler and func_button entities can now be the entity target for scripted_sentence entities, and are allowed to speak in multiplayer.<\/li>\n<li>Incorporated func_vehicle entity support from Counter-Strike, for mod-makers to use. Full SDK update will come later, but level designers can use it now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Native Linux Buiild<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Added support for the software renderer.<\/li>\n<li>Improved font rendering.<\/li>\n<li>Many stability and behavior fixes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Localization files updated.<\/li>\n<li>Miscellaneous security fixes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Notes<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The previous version of the game has been archived to a publicly visible Beta branch named &#8220;steam_legacy&#8221;, with the description &#8220;Pre-25th Anniversary Build.&#8221; If a mod or feature is behaving in an unexpected way, you may need to run this archived build until the issue is resolved in the default build.<\/li>\n<li>We now consider this anniversary version of Half Life to be the definitive version, and the one we&#8217;ll continue to support going forward. Therefore, we&#8217;ll be reducing the visibility of Half Life: Source on the Steam Store.
