The more I played, the more I understood its importance, and the more I appreciated what a huge task bringing this game to a modern audience would be.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><\/figure>\n<section class=\"xwsrc-block-content-block\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column flex-basis-50 push--25 column--content\">\n<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Digital Eclipse Preserved and Enhanced One of the Most Important RPGs of All Time<\/h2>\n<p>Originally released for the Apple II in 1981, <em>Wizardry: Proving Grounds<\/em> <em>of the Mad Overlord<\/em> literally defined the video role-playing game. The dungeon-crawling, monster-slaying, level-upping gameplay would inspire nearly every designer of every role-playing game that followed.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Sherman, our lead engineer, understands the importance of this game more than most. He\u2019s leading Digital Eclipse\u2019s all-new remaster of <em>Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord<\/em>, which is now available on Xbox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesigners like Hironobu Sakaguchi (<em>Final Fantasy<\/em>) and Yuji Horii (<em>Dragon Quest<\/em>) have said, \u2018<em>Wizardry<\/em> was an influence for our game,\u2019\u201d Ian said. \u201cWhen you get to play it, it\u2019s just so clear how directly elements of <em>Dragon Quest<\/em> or <em>Final Fantasy<\/em> or <em>Pokemon<\/em> were inspired by features in <em>Wizardry<\/em>. I understand why everybody is trying to recapture that feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time in decades that a version of the first <em>Wizardry<\/em> has been available. A new initiative between Digital Eclipse, <em>Wizardry<\/em>\u2019s original publisher SirTech, and current trademark owner Drecom (which publishes new <em>Wizardry<\/em> games made in Japan) untangled the web of legal permissions required to make this remaster possible. He enjoys what he calls the \u201ccode forensics\u201d of bringing back classic games.<\/p>\n<p>What began as a research exercise ended up in the final product. \u201cUltimately, we ported the Apple II game to Unreal Engine,\u201d he said.\u201cThe game that you play in our <em>Wizardry<\/em> is the Apple II version of <em>Wizardry<\/em> \u2013 that\u2019s where we started, and we built up from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That means all the decisions, difficulty, and dice rolls in our remaster come straight from the original code, recreating the original dungeon-crawling experience. So, you can see things like a half-implemented feature, or something that was a feature that they removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking into <em>Wizardry<\/em>\u2019s original code, Ian could see all the information that the original game hides from players\u2019 prying eyes. The Bestiary also features exclusive lore for each creature, written by Benny Matsuyma, a novelist and game writer who was a noted contributor to Japan\u2019s <em>Wizardry<\/em> games.<\/p>\n<p>This greater revelation of details hiding in the original game\u2019s code extends to combat as well, which Ian points out could be particularly obscured in the original <em>Wizardry<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is a longsword? Well, it\u2019s more expensive than a short sword or a dagger.
