The developer of Palworld<\/a> has said Nintendo is yet to make a complaint after The Pok\u00e9mon Company said it intended to investigate amid the \u201cPok\u00e9mon rip-off\u201d claims earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Palworld, dubbed \u2018Pok\u00e9mon with Guns,\u2019 launched in early access form in January 2024 on PC via Steam and on Xbox as a day-one Game Pass title. It saw enormous popularity overnight, becoming one of the biggest game launches of all time. But it\u2019s also one of the most controversial. Developer Pocketpair has said its staff has received death threats amid the Pok\u00e9mon “rip-off” claims<\/u><\/a>, which it has denied.<\/p>\n

Soon after Palworld\u2019s launch Nintendo moved quickly to remove an eye-catching Pok\u00e9mon mod<\/u><\/a>, then The Pokemon Company issued a statement<\/u><\/a>, saying: “We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to Pok\u00e9mon.” At the time, IGN asked lawyers whether Nintendo could successfully sue<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now, speaking to Game File<\/a>, Pocketpair boss Takuro Mizobe insisted it has yet to receive any complaint from Nintendo or The Pok\u00e9mon Company, even after The Pok\u00e9mon Company issued its statement that it intended to launch an investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing at all,\u201d Mizobe said. \u201cNintendo and the Pok\u00e9mon Company didn\u2019t say anything to us. Of course I love Pok\u00e9mon and respect it. I grew up with it, in my generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite this, fans continue to compare Palworld to Pok\u00e9mon, and this week\u2019s major new update, called Sakurajima<\/a>, will no-doubt fuel those comparisons. Pocketpair has also teased Palworld on PlayStation<\/a>, although a Nintendo Switch version sounds unlikely. IGN\u2019s Palworld early access review<\/u><\/a> returned an 8\/10. We said: \u201cPalworld may crib quite a bit from Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s homework, but deep survival mechanics and a hilarious attitude make it hard to put down \u2013 even in early access.\u201d<\/p>\n

It turns out that in 2010, then student developer Mizobe created a DS game while enrolled in a one-year Nintendo Game Seminar in Tokyo. Game File asked if he learned any lessons from working with Nintendo that stuck with him years later.<\/p>\n

\u201cKind of,\u201d Mizobe replied, reportedly with a laugh. \u201cI always think: to make new things is very hard. In game development, of course, sometimes we have to do it, but, as much as possible, I try to avoid creating new things.\u201d<\/p>\n
