When the company was told that was not possible, SAG-AFTRA says, Formosa \u201csecretly transferred the game to a shell company and sent out casting notices for \u2018NON-UNION\u2019 talent only.\u201d <\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"image-with-caption\" data-image-url=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2024\/05\/03\/043024-lol-patch-14-9-notes-banner-1714756967064.jpg\" data-image-title=\"undefined\" data-image-class=\"article-image-full-size\" data-image-link=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2024\/05\/03\/043024-lol-patch-14-9-notes-banner-1714756967064.jpg\" data-caption=\"SAG-AFTRA%20has%20called%20a%20strike%20against%20League%20of%20Legends.%20\"><\/section>\n<\/section>\n<p>SAG-AFTRA calls the alleged actions by Formosa \u201cegregious violations of core tenets of labor law,\u201d and has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the company with the National Labor Relations Board in response. Not only that, but SAG-AFTRA\u2019s National Executive Director has called a strike against one of Formosa\u2019s most popular titles, League of Legends, meaning all SAG-AFTRA members must cease any union-covered services they may have been providing for the game.<\/p>\n<p>League of Legends publisher Riot Games, meanwhile, distanced itself from the allegations made against Formosa in a statement posted a few hours after strike was called. Riot says that, ever since League of Legends became a union project five years ago, it &#8220;has only asked Formosa to engage with Union performers in the US and has never once suggested doing otherwise.&#8221; The statement, which you can read in full below, also notes that the claims surrounding Formosa are in regard to a non-Riot game. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">League of Legends has nothing to do with the complaint mentioned in SAG-AFTRA\u2019s press release. We want to be clear: since becoming a union project five years ago, League of Legends has only asked Formosa to engage with Union performers in the US and has never once suggested doing\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SH4XvY1qtA\">https:\/\/t.co\/SH4XvY1qtA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Riot Games (@riotgames) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/riotgames\/status\/1838678925742084178?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 24, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s bad enough that Formosa and other companies are refusing to agree to the fair A.I. terms that have been agreed to by the film, television, streaming, and music industries, as well as more than 90 other game developers,\u201d SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director &amp; Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said in the union&#8217;s statement. \u201cTo commit illegal unfair labor practices is beyond the pale and won\u2019t be tolerated by SAG-AFTRA members. Formosa will be held accountable, starting with an immediate strike of League of Legends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeague of Legends is a game of champions. Instead of championing the union performers who bring their immense talent and experience to beloved characters, decision-makers at Formosa have chosen to try to evade and abandon them,\u201d added Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee Chair Sarah Elmaleh. \u201cSuch double-dealing is very disappointing from a longtime committed union signatory. And such regrettable choices are unnecessary when our union committee and staff are as collaborative and excited to create protected work as our performers love to collaborate with game makers, and love this work.\u201d<\/p>\n<section data-transform=\"quoteBox\">&#8220;Formosa will be held accountable, starting with an immediate strike of League of Legends.\u201d<\/section>\n<p>SAG-AFTRA called the video game strike back in July, the main reason being that video game companies have not come to an agreement with actors over regulating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in their projects. The union notes in today\u2019s statement that Formosa is \u201cone of the members of the bargaining group that has refused to agree to protect our members against the unethical use of A.I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some positive momentum in the strike, however, was made earlier this month after Last Sentinel developer Lightspeed LA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/voice-actor-strike-makes-progress-as-last-sentinel-dev-signs-ai-protection-agreement\"><u>signed SAG-AFTRA\u2019s agreement<\/u><\/a> promising better rights for actors and protections against artificial intelligence. Following that announcement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sagaftra.org\/sag-aftra-applauds-80-games-signed-union-agreements-during-video-game-strike#:~:text=terms.-,In%20a%20huge%20win%20for%20SAG-AFTRA%2C%2080%20video%20games,protections%20%E2%80%94%20are%20fair%20and%20achievable.\"><u>the union revealed<\/u><\/a> that 80 games signed their tiered-budget or interim agreement, \u201cproving that the union\u2019s provisions \u2014 which include common sense A.I. protections \u2014 are fair and achievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IGN has reached out to Formosa for comment.
