I didn\u2019t have the fastest twitch reflexes as a teenager, let alone now nearing 40, so I\u2019ll never do well in a straight battle of headshots and KDR. But I\u2019ve poured hundreds of hours into <em>Overwatch <\/em>and <em>Helldivers 2<\/em> because they reward strategic thinking and offer an interesting range of different playstyles, which in turn produces a more compellingly wide range of stories. They also allow me to play alongside more skilled friends without feeling like anyone is compromising their fun.<\/p>\n<p><em>Arc Raiders<\/em> may be the next shooter to pull me in. I played for 3 hours across 3 different maps, both solo and in a squad, in a recent closed preview event of the whole game for journalists and influencers.\u00a0This upcoming\u00a0PvPvE\u00a0extraction shooter\u00a0is set in a\u00a0future reminiscent of \u201cThe Matrix\u201d \u2013\u00a0rogue robots called Arc have\u00a0devastated humanity, driving the survivors to\u00a0hide deep\u00a0underground in\u00a0a\u00a0last\u00a0stronghold\u00a0city, Speranza (\u201chope\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure threats of both Arc robots and their fellow raiders, then\u00a0making it safely home\u00a0with whatever they can carry back to base\u00a0to sell, scrap, craft, or use on subsequent raids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0chasing the microgenre du jour, extraction shooters, which are\u00a0built around the same general risk\/reward loop of going into a hostile area, completing\u00a0objectives, and extracting\u00a0with goodies that will fuel future runs.\u00a0If\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0enjoyed the likes of\u00a0<em>Escape from Tarkov<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Hunt: Showdown<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Arc Raiders<\/em>\u00a0is aiming to be your next obsession \u2013 and if you haven\u2019t\u00a0dipped a toe into extraction shooters yet,\u00a0this is shaping up to be a gorgeous entry point.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure Raiders<\/em> was tension. Any encounter going\u00a0wrong could mean not just the opportunity cost of whatever new spoils\u00a0we\u00a0hoped to take\u00a0home, but\u00a0also losing all the equipment we brought in with\u00a0us.\u00a0That kind of high-stakes resource pressure, where\u00a0one\u2019s\u00a0ability to\u00a0make progress depends\u00a0on building and maintaining momentum that can be easily lost,\u00a0is part of the appeal for the genre\u2019s hardcore\u00a0fans, but\u00a0also\u00a0adds a certain prickliness that\u00a0<em>could\u00a0<\/em>deter other prospective players.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Arc\u00a0Raiders<\/em>\u00a0graciously\u00a0smooths this out\u00a0with free loadouts\u00a0that let you\u00a0jump into a\u00a0raid with a minimum\u00a0viable\u00a0kit and no risk of loss, helping\u00a0players that might be stuck treading water while they get their bearings in the game.\u00a0Every\u00a0raider\u00a0also has \u201cScrappy,\u201d a pet rooster that collects a steady drip of basic materials for them while out on raids, ensuring\u00a0they can always craft basic necessities like bandages and bullets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Completing\u00a0objectives\u00a0during a raid, whether\u00a0they extract or not,\u00a0also nets skill points that can be distributed between three different trees. Some were dominated by long,\u00a0quiet\u00a0stretches of scavenging through buildings\u00a0and sneaking past robots, punctuated by a handful of staccato encounters. Developer Embark is no doubt helped here by the fact that\u00a0<em>Arc Raiders<\/em> started as purely PvE experience before settling into its current extraction\u00a0form, which means real development time and resources went into making Arc\u00a0enemies\u00a0feel like the star of the show, and not just a supporting player.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Part of this that really stood out to me was how, as the developers have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/embarkstudios\/transforming-animation-with-machine-learning-27ac694590c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discussed previously<\/a>, the\u00a0movement\u00a0and behaviors for the Arc\u00a0were not traditionally keyframed and hand-crafted by\u00a0animators, but\u00a0rather\u00a0trained\u00a0through machine learning applied to physics simulations. Shooting out an assault\u00a0drone\u2019s rotor\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0send it crashing down like\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0hoped, but rather it awkwardly swung down before compensating with the others and swooping back around to continue the fight in a way that felt compellingly organic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stray, small Arc were easily manageable\u00a0in\u00a0isolation, but\u00a0add a few more (or just a single large one) and the situation could quickly get out of hand. Following from the graphic design of the logo, the game has a charming \u201970s retrofuturism look. This is especially true in the character cosmetics, which were fun and colorful, and had a nice variety of silhouettes \u2013 I gave my raider a bright green motorcycle helmet, leather flight jacket, and tight jeans with a stripe up the side. Compared to its peers in the genre, <em>Arc Raiders\u2019\u00a0<\/em>more colorful and playful design sensibility (like unlockable hats for Scrappy \u2013 he got a matching\u00a0little motorcycle\u00a0helmet)\u00a0goes a long way to piquing my interest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0approach the full dayglo\u00a0hyperpop palette of\u00a0fellow upcoming extraction shooter, <em>Marathon<\/em>, though, and\u00a0grounds it with\u00a0a\u00a0realistic\u00a0layer of\u00a0post-apocalyptic wear and tear.\u00a0Light and sound do a lot to support immersion\u00a0as well;\u00a0stalking our way through flashlight-lit underground tunnels\u00a0crammed with rusted-out cars\u00a0while\u00a0muffled gunfire echoes above, or darting from shadow to shadow of bombed out apartment buildings across a plaza lit brightly by the midday sun, keeping an ear out for the ominous beeps of Arc sentries in the distance.
