Earlier this week we sadly lost Roger Kean, co-founder of the legendary Crash and Zzap!64 magazines amongst many others. If you’d like to learn more about the legacy of Crash, Graeme told its story in brilliant detail for us back in 2017. As with the passing of his friend, colleague and partner Oliver Frey, the death of Roger Kean, anticipated but no less sad, has dismayed so many retro gaming fans in the last week, particularly those affiliated with the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 computers. Together with Frey and his brother Franco, Kean formed Newsfield Publishing in 1983. Both…
Guilty Gear Strive players have deemed the game “unplayable” following the discovery of a security exploit that allows hackers to target streamers. The “R-Code exploit” not only enables hackers to crash their systems and forfeit matches, but it also sees unscrupulous users take control of direct messages and create untenable memory leaks (thanks, Vice). “Whoever is using this r-code exploit can now use this vulnerability to cause the GGST client to have some sort of leak, slowing the game to an unplayable crawl,” tweeted hotashis. The voice of Monkey Island’s Captain LeChuck, Earl Boen, has died at the age of 81. Boen – who can be heard in the Monkey Island series right up until 2010 – was reportedly diagnosed with stage four lung cancer towards the end of last year. Boen has been sharing his voice with our favourite video games since 1995, having also starred in World of Warcraft, Psychonauts, Call of Duty, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Sons of Liberty. MobyGames lists 2016’s World of Warcraft: Legion as his final video game voice credit. Read more Source…
Battle royale Deathverse: Let It Die dev to “temporarily suspend” the game just four months after launch
The team behind battle royale Deathverse: Let It Die has confirmed that it will be indefinitely suspended just four months after it debuted on Steam and PlayStation consoles. Developer Supertrick Games says it’s temporarily suspending the free-to-play game due to ongoing “challenges”, saying that since launch, the game has been plagued with issues concerning “in-game matchmaking and lag”. It plans to “redevelop” the game whilst it is offline. The service will go dark at 3am UK time on 18th July 2023, and no relaunch date has yet been confirmed. The team does, however, confirm that season 2’s new content will…
Chinese megacorp NetEase has acquired Skybox Labs, a Canadian studio that’s worked on notable titles like Halo Infinite, Minecraft, and Fallout 76. Founded in 2011, SkyBox Labs – which is based in Burnaby and Victoria, Canada – has co-developed with partners like Xbox Game Studios, EA, and Wizards of the Coast. The company says it will continue to “operate independently”, “working closely with existing and new partners to pursue creative opportunities”. “Over the last decade, we’ve had the pleasure to work on beloved games such as Halo Infinite, Minecraft, and Fallout 76,” said co-founder Shyang Kong. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine, when a game becomes a series and an admired one at that, that once upon a time there was nothing. There was nothing tangible. All there were, were hopes and ideas, swirling around. And the process of materialising them into something: it’s a fragile thing. There’s no certainty that what will come out the other end will even survive that process. And A Plague Tale: Innocence, it turns out, very nearly didn’t.For one dread-filled moment near the end of the originally-allotted development time, the Plague Tale project nearly failed. French studio Asobo suffered a sucker-punch…
Game of the Week goes out to all of our supporters as part of the Eurogamer Essentials newsletter. There’s going to be a slight shake-up of the supporters program in the near future (don’t worry – it’s all good news) so stay tuned for more details, and thanks as ever for your support – it’s much appreciated. True to my word I spent a fair amount of the festive break smashing through the rudimentary thrills of The Callisto Protocol, finding that a couple of hours getting stuck into its meaty combat provided perfect catharsis after a day with the wider…
Valve’s Steam Deck has revolutionised PC gaming, its 15W custom AMD processor exceeding expectations and doing a great job in delivering handheld triple-A experience – but Unreal Engine 5 may well be its toughest challenge yet, owing to its Nanite micro-geometry and RT-based Lumen lighting. This is next-gen – or rather current-gen – stuff, so whether the Deck can handle it is key to its longer term prospects. To put that to the test, we decided to see if we could run the latest version of Fortnite with all of these features in play – and the results are surprising.…
The wonderful Powerwash Simulator launches on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on 30th January 2023, Sony has announced. The announcement was made as part of a PlayStation blog post rounding up a raft of indie games coming to the consoles. We’re big fans of FuturLab’s Powerwash Simulator here at Eurogamer, and have written about it extensively. You clean dirt off stuff, essentially. It’s satisfying, therapeutic and weirdly tricky at times. You can even go prone like an MLG powerwash pro to get right under those hard to reach bits. Following on from our Ryzen 9 7900X and Ryzen 5 7600X review, it’s finally time to look at the two remaining CPUs in AMD’s Ryzen 7000 family: the $449/£439 Ryzen 7 7700X, a potential gaming value champ, and the $799/£769 Ryzen 9 7950X, a sixteen-core titan expected to outperform almost every consumer CPU in content creation workloads. We’ve seen significant price cuts on Ryzen 7000 processors since launch – so are these CPUs worth buying in 2023?As a quick recap, these Zen 4 processors are profoundly different from AMD’s last-gen Ryzen 5000 parts. There’s been a shift to a new…
