Well hello there fellow dino-wranglers! I’m Julia Wolbach, and I’m here to share the exciting news about Tailbreak launching on XBOX Series X|S & XPA today, as well as share some secrets and hints to survive this on-rails dino-packed nightmare! We’re dragging you back to the roots of on-rails light gun action as zombies step aside to let the dinosaurs roar center stage!
Slam in a Quarter and Grab a Friend
In this loose retelling of our hit Dinobreak title, Tailbreak introduces Alex and Rin, two unlikely survivors who find themselves trapped in Cypress Ridge as dinos big and small rampage across the city. Either alone or in local two-player co-op, they’ll have to fight their way to safety in a fully voice-acted story mode, with escalating threats but increasingly powerful weapons at their disposal.
Some Tips for You Would-Be Dino-Snacks
Make sure to shoot everything in the environment to uncover hidden items and weapons. Boxes, barrels, and much more glow, and you never know what you may find inside. Your inventory is limited, so you’ll need to keep finding more supplies and using what you’ve got if you hope to survive. It’s worth balancing your offensive and defensive items. You never know when you may need to heal, but holding onto a sprout item can prevent you from taking advantage of a screen clearing grenade. Sometimes the most powerful defense is an explosive offense!
Another item type to keep an eye out for is the red dino egg. Using this will add several levels to your egg chain on activation. Use one when you’re about to lose your combo to save it and rack up the points! Better scores will lead to faster unlocks of new weapons and upgrades that can give you the edge on the battlefield.
The meaty core of Tailbreak comes after Alex and Rin’s tale of survival. Venture into the Mutation Matrix game mode, a semi-procedurally generated warzone where enemies, weapons, items, and more are fully randomized at each encounter.
To increase your odds of success, you’ll need to increase your high scores. As you score higher on each level and beat your scores, you’ll unlock new starting weapons, abilities, and allow weapons to upgrade to higher levels during gameplay. Use the Succubus handgun to regenerate your health as you take out enemies, so you’ll be able to survive longer and attain higher scores!. You’ll need to score a cumulative 36,000 points to unlock this effective firearm.
Don’t forget to level up your sidearms. At a total high score of 48,000, for example, you’ll be able to wield a level three shotgun. You can access upgrades by either collecting a duplicate of the same sidearm or using an upgrade item in the middle of a playthrough. Using a higher-level sidearm yields advantages like better damage output, larger clip size, and higher score multipliers. Even if you run out of continues, increasing your score output will help you inch toward better and better performances.
Use your new toys to take on this rogue-lite RPG mode and become powerful enough to venture into Primal Difficulty, a truly unbalanced fight for your life!
Wait a Second… Did I See a Zombie!?
That’s right! It isn’t Cypress Ridge without a few of the undead coming by for a quick bite. Outside of Story Mode, you have the option to mix and match enemy types – including welcoming undead zombies and special mutated monsters into the mix. Choose how Cypress Ridge gets obliterated by playing just with dinosaurs, or just with the undead, or perhaps mixing them together. New threats and challenges await as you remix your experience, and opportunities to go for a higher score and unlock more abilities and weapons. So don’t be afraid to get groovy in the Mutation Matrix, because it’s about to get messy.
Play it Your Way with XPA
XBOX Series X|S offers advanced ray tracing and cutting-edge visuals thanks to Unreal Engine 5.7.1. If you’re packing a powerful PC, you’ll find even more bells and whistles to enable as well as being able to run at extremely high framerates. You can also expect a great looking experience when playing on the XBOX ROG Ally X handheld. The dinosaurs will be delighted to eat you wherever you are thanks to XPA, so pick your favorite place to play and prepare to become lunch!
