Faraday Blues: Rewrite Your Family’s Fate Across Three Shattered Realities

Hi, I’m Zhenghua Yang (Z), Founder of Serenity Forge and Game Director on Faraday Blues. If you just watched the XBOX Tokyo Game Show Broadcast, you saw the world premiere of a game we’ve kept close to our hearts for a long time.

Faraday Blues is a surreal sci-fi adventure about a daughter searching for parents who don’t know she exists.

You play as Lina, a mysterious girl who awakens somewhere she doesn’t understand. An old computer introduces her to a strange tabletop filled with playing cards. Two of them bear the faces of her parents. However, they have no idea who she is. Worse yet, their lives are already filled with tragedy.

So Lina does the only thing she can: reset the board and try again.

Rewrite Fate With the People Who Lived It

The cards in Faraday Blues don’t summon creatures or deal damage. They represent people.

The game is built around a 52-card deck containing characters, memories, items, and subversive pieces of the Faraday family’s history. You place character cards into conversations, locations, and major events, then enter the timeline and experience the consequences of your choices.

Place one person outside a bedroom instead of another, and a tragedy might unfold differently. Send two characters to spend time together, and their relationship may permanently change. Let someone discover a memory or object, and they may carry its influence decades into the future.

Characters can move toward Order or Entropy, change suits, transform shapes, and develop in ways that affect future possibilities. These changes may even persist as the story moves forward in unexpected ways.

One of my favorite parts of the game system is also one of the simplest: people cannot be everywhere at once. If you send someone into a smaller interaction, they may be occupied when the next major event occurs. Saving one relationship can mean leaving another person alone at exactly the wrong moment.

Sometimes you’ll find what seems like the perfect solution, but then something else goes wrong…

… And you reset the board again.

Three Visual Novels That Transform With Your Choices

Faraday Blues is really three interconnected visual novels, three visual realities, three tragedies, spread across three different eras of the Faraday family. Each reality takes a completely different shape, with its own visual identity, atmosphere, narrative style, and version of the apartment you’re exploring.

But they are not separate stories.

What happens in the first visual novel changes the board in the second. Relationships, memories, items, character states, and the endings you reach propagate forward through time. By the third era, you’ll be unexpectedly entering the accumulated result of every choice you’ve made.

Across those stories are 64 endings. Some can be victories, but most aren’t.

You may save someone only to create a different tragedy. You may reach an ending that appears better until you understand what it cost. And certain paths will only become possible once you’ve learned enough about the people involved to manipulate the timeline in ways you couldn’t before.

There are also systems, card transformations, hidden conditions, and parts of the game we aren’t ready to talk about yet, or perhaps will never talk about.

A Game About Wanting to Change What Already Happened

This story is intensely personal to me, but it’s not mine alone. I’m creating Faraday Blues alongside co-creator and lead artist Satchely (character artist of Doki Doki Literature Club) and narrative director Kevin Ye. All three of us have brought different pieces of ourselves into the game.

Most of us have moments in our lives we mentally rewrite even though we know they can never change, so we built Faraday Blues around those emotions, and what that temptation could mean for the future of the world we live in.

In addition to Satchely and Kevin Ye, we are also working with Kris Wilson, creator of Cyanide & Happiness, who is composing music for the game. And Nichole Goodnight, the voice of Slay the Princess, along with our cast of amazing actors, who we will reveal at a later date.

For all of its timelines, cards, strange technology, and 64 endings, Faraday Blues is ultimately a heartfelt story about humanity and a reflection of ourselves.
