Dead Island 2 is back with a New Game Plus mode that’s not afraid to up the zombie splatter movie mayhem. It’s going loco with the places and encounters that you know and love, throwing in tougher zombies where you least expect them, and making sure your next playthrough won’t be like the last. Of course, you’re going to have the weapons, skills and abilities that you’ve built up finishing the main campaign, but you’ll also face the game’s biggest, baddest challenges yet. And they don’t come any more badass than the terrifying Revenants.
“The Revenants are almost like world bosses” says Dambusters Associate Lead Level Designer James Gamlin. “Some of them are placed where the player will meet them during a normal playthrough, while some will require a little more searching just to find them. It’s really about that extra bit of challenge. We want players to experience something new.”
“These are specific new zombie encounters that the player is going to discover in New Game Plus” says Dambuster Studios Senior Designer Tim Donks. “They’re going to find these new extra-challenging encounters, with unique new variants of enemies the player knows in locations where you didn’t see them before.”
The Revenants have had a gory goth glow-up that makes them instantly identifiable, with layers of what looks like thick white make-up and deep black rings around the eyes. The look was inspired by classic horror movie villains, and there’s certainly a fierce new energy that’s more Halloween or Evil Dead than Walking Dead. Think the existing Mutator is creepy? Wait until you see the Revenant version. Between them, the Revenant Butcher and Revenant Screamer should give the toughest slayer some nightmares!
And it’s not just the look that’s changed. Revenants will have changes to their attacks or their behaviors to make each encounter a killer thriller. By focusing on specific attacks or fighting differently, they’ll force even seasoned Dead Island 2 veterans to mix up their tactics or tweak their builds. Some will also appear in new locations that the team wasn’t able to utilize in the main campaign, while familiar locations will be turned upside down. Think the underground car park under the Halperin Hotel is a zombie-slaying cakewalk? Play New Game Plus and get ready for a shake-up!
Still, there are rich rewards waiting for those brave enough to confront Dead Island 2’s new uber-zombies. Slaying the Revenants is the only way to collect unique weapons; ranged and melee weapons inspired by classic horror movies that you’re only going to find in New Game Plus.
