At long last, the sun is rising! Rebel Wolves have finally announced that The Blood of Dawnwalker will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Xbox Cloud on September 3, 2026! Even better, new gameplay and world information has come spilling out of the crypt! Let’s review everything we’ve learned about the realm of Vale Sangora and how the Rebel Wolves team brought vampires and their world to life.
Reality Becomes Dark Fantasy
To begin, the team took inspiration from the majestic Carpathian mountain ranges of Western Europe for the game’s geography. The Vale is rich with different climates, immersive soundscapes, active changes to the weather, native wildlife, and monsters pulled from local folklore. This allows Vale Sangora to feel familiar and distinct; a grounded reality where unspeakable horrors have crept in pretending to be friends.
You’ll see them by the side of the road, these horrors. In the shrines to Brencis the vampire lord, for example. His likeness and coat of arms is omnipresent in the vale; you’ll see it on the coins, in freshly painted church frescos, in the new religion of the nation. The vrakhiri (the local name for vampires) tend to the human population with a certain amount of care and they style themselves as benevolent rulers… but they are more akin to farmers maintaining a prized herd.
For example, the vrakhiri think nothing of using human blood as a resource to be shipped and stored strategically and Coen can choose to disrupt this trade when he encounters blood convoys moving across the land. That kind of disruption might weaken the vampires’ operations, but it also raises his infamy and paints a target on his back.
All of these points of interest have a similar push and pull of consequences. Kill a local blacksmith for his gold and that forge will become inaccessible to you. Free a captive and even though you may alienate the local guards, you could also learn a new skill from a new friend. It’s up to you to decide how your Coen will write his story.
Weave Your Own Legend
As you may have heard, The Blood of Dawnwalker operates as a “narrative sandbox,” meaning you will build Coen’s story out of how you interact with the characters and situations you encounter. Time is a resource that you spend when you make important choices, so the team have made sure that every part of Vale Sangora is as full of possibilities as it is full of beauty and grandeur.
Each significant choice will move time forward a certain amount. Smaller choices may only take a time segment or two, while more important choices might cost more. And of course, with each time segment spent, the world updates. Characters make choices beyond your control and events continue to unfold with or without your intervention.
The world is lovely yet unforgiving, and dark outcomes can easily result from actions taken with good intentions. You’ll have to decide if Coen will struggle against that darkness or let himself slip out of the light.
However, you will have some guidance. There are traces left behind by other characters in small stories, items, or notes you may find while exploring in the limitless span between important choices. You might learn something about someone’s motivations that help you make your next decision or you could find hints about events happening elsewhere.
Torn Between Night and Day
While Coen’s life is in your hands, the life he had before the vrakhiri arrived has a huge impact on his choices. He has a unique relationship with each member of his family, his siblings and his parents. They are all affected by the blood mass in their own way, and their opinions are shaped by their previous experiences of poverty and illness. It might not always be pretty, but family means family, doesn’t it?
There’s also a growing feeling of rebellion against the ruling vampires among the human citizens and as Coen grows in his abilities as a vampire, he can be influenced by both the allure of power and his bonds to the community. Under the stewardship of the vrakhiri, humans are safe from disease, but is that security worth the price they must pay? And what would come after the vampires are defeated, if such a thing could be done? Better the devils they know? Coen will have find out where his loyalty lies.
