In 2000, the first-ever Hitman game officially launched and introduced players to a different kind of stealth experience. Hitman: Codename 47 challenged players to use disguises, environments, and careful planning to complete their objectives, laying the foundation for a new kind of sandbox gameplay.

That foundation was expanded upon in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, refining the original game’s stealth systems and giving players more control over how they approached each mission. The rating system was highly touted by players, because the more professionally a player completed a mission, without making any noise, and without unnecessary bloodshed, the higher the rating was. The highest rating was named “Silent Assassin.” Hitman: Contracts brought a darker tone to the series, exploring the psychological weight behind Agent 47’s work while delivering some of the most atmospheric missions in the trilogy.
