Counterplay Games is a team, first and foremost – a small, scrappy, and passionate collective of like-minded developers, dedicated to crafting high-skill games that champion player experience. Our new game – Armatus – is a product of our heart, soul, and fire-forged camaraderie; we’ve poured everything into this project, have harbored it through (seemingly) insurmountable challenges, and are thrilled to finally share it with the world.

The world has ended. In a shattered reality – torn apart by rapture and apocalypse – planes of existence dance together, and demonic hordes have inherited the earth. The streets run red with blood. The screams have long since faded.  

But four remain.  

Barricaded in the bowels of the Cathédrale de Trois, four members of the Armatus – an ancient religious order – have been left behind, forsaken by God. They have summoned you to fight on their behalf and usher them to heaven. But are they worthy of that which they seek? 

Humanity’s Time Is Over 

Armatus is an action-packed, gothic-tinged tale about forlorn clerics trapped in a biblical, post-apocalyptic hellscape. They are the last mortals. The only humans left. The four that you’ve sworn to protect.  

As a mysterious, otherworldly warrior – a deathless entity bound to sacred armor – you will traverse the Scoured Path, and search for The Sunless Gate at its end; a doorway of myth that may hold the keys to their salvation. 

The Scoured Path is an ever-shifting crucible that winds through our version of Paris, France – a twisted, labyrinthine nightmare torn apart by cosmic catastrophe. The Path will be different for every player, every time; procedurally-spawned rooms, enemy compositions, and rewards await down every road, and behind every door. No journey is ever the same.     

But there won’t be time to take in the sights. As you push along the Path, you’ll be overrun by hordes of grotesque, horrifying demons, each with their own infernal abilities, tactics, and weakpoints. Some demons—legendary in stature, feared by their own kind – will stop at nothing to decorate Paris with your limbs.   

This game will test you. Preparation, practice, and skill will be paramount to survival. The offspring of hell have picked the earth clean of souls, and are ravenous for one more.  

Start Strong, End Godly 

You are the Warrior – an eternal killing machine from another world.  

At your disposal are holy guns, celestial powers, blessings, perks, and boons that beg to be used in lethal combination. Shatter the earth, summon arcane shields, throw blighted grenades, or command pillars of flame; wield the power that is yours by ritual and rite.     

Armatus is frenetic, chaotic, high-octane, and breakable by design. Deep buildcraft and player expression are at the heart of this experience; abilities of every kind can be altered, upgraded, modified, and combined to uncover synergies of staggering devastation. Are you a walking bomb, a cosmic assassin, or a scythe-wielding butcher? Experiment, gloat, share; we want to see your busted builds.  

So don the Exalted Armor – forged by the Armatus, perfected over millennia—and paint its holy plates with the blood of demonkind. 

Progress Through Death 

Armatus is a roguelite at its core; in our game, knowledge is a weapon, failure is a tool, and death is never the end. 

The Warrior is eternal, and the Scoured Path is long – a purgatorial gauntlet that demands improvement through repetition. With every death comes new abilities, upgrades, and possibilities. Run, die, evolve, repeat. The Warrior has been down this Path before.  

Certain accumulated aspects – like currencies and character upgrades – will persist through death. So rebirth means strength, and every defeat renders you better-equipped for the attempts ahead. How far down the Path can you go? How many runs will it take?  

But be warned, and clutch at all hope: the Scoured Path is not only a crucible of combat, but of torment, and in death may be revealed hidden truths, dark secrets, forbidden rituals, and sins that won’t stay dead. 

Will you become strong enough to defeat the true horror that stalks the Scoured Path’s end?

Armatus launches in 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud. It’ll also be available via Xbox Game Pass.
